Can't stand the protein shakes!

Recommended Posts

Im surprised because I didn't mind them at all pre surgery. They are so sweet they taste nasty! I've already throw out two huge jars of Syntrax. The only one that I can manage at all is the Breakfast Essentials. I'm starting full liquids tomorrow.

So does anyone have any times for cutting the sweetness factor?

Also, I'm looking for ideas about managing to get 60 gr of protein/day without the shakes.

I know this stuff has been covered before, but I can't find the threads.

Thanks

Try the unflavored Protein mixes, powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury and Syntrax both have good ones - you can mix them in anything you want, yogurt, chicken broth (watch for temperature instructions to avoid clumping). Also look for a recipe book on Amazon called The Bariatric Foodie Guide to Perfect Protein shakes - she has tons of ideas and i think you can find her blog online by Googling Bariatric Foodie. Also - Google "The World According to Eggface" she is also a blogger with tons of recipes and tips for post surgery.

Good Luck - I consider myself lucky that I have found several shakes that I love and can drink everyday... Premier Protein Chocloate (Try Costco) Ready to drinks are my M-F go to Breakfast drink ;-D

i like eggface too, lots of great recipes including a philly pizza that the hubs and i can't wait to try!

i was told by my nut that for now (immediately post op) there is no way to be able to eat enough Protein to meet your daily needs. she told me too that at about 3-4 months post-op i should be able to drop down to 1 a day, but that i will probably depend on at least 1/2 to 1 shake a day for many MANY months to meet my Protein needs. i know all programs are different, so that's just MY program.

since you are just had surgery.. It would be hard to get your Protein requirement through regular eating. I do like the protein Soups. New Direction has great Soup. Ask the hospital where you

had surgery if they sell high protein soups. Quick Weight Loss and Medifast sells high protein

soups also.

Unjury chicken Soup Protein was something I relied on a lot early on. That and the HealthSmart protein Soups. I started with the variety pack, figured out my favorites, and then got another box of each of those flavors.

Make sure you follow the directions with respect to adding protein to hot liquid, or you WILL regret it!

HINT: Not only do liquids hotter than 130 degrees clump when unfl Protein Powder is added, it also denatures the Protein, making it useless. Just warm up ur broth or cream Soups to about 120 (still hot enuf to enjoy, but not burn urself) and add the powder before eating, not before heating it up.

I completely understand. I hate the after taste of artificial sweetner and the shakes are so sweet. I was able to cut the sweetness by throwing in plain non-fat yogurt in the blender and adding the shake. This also helps get more Protein in your diet. It gets a little foamy and that came make you gasy but let it sit and you'll be fine :) best of luck

I , too, thought everything was too sweet post op. I diluted my Premier chocolate and vanilla at least 1/2 and 1/2 with skim milk. The powders (including the Syntrax nectars) I mixed with at least twice as much Water or skim milk as the directions said. And like dee81sd said, plain Greek yogurt can cut the sweetness some. I also used tons of Unjury unflavored powder...mixed it in every broth, cream Soup or bisque I could find. Diluted and strained the thicker cream Soups.< /p>

I was like you pre surgery. I thought the Protein shakes were a desert, absoultly loved them. Now I would just as soon drink Water from a mud puddle. That being said, I have been unable to get the NUT recommended 80-100 grams of Protein a day without using the protein powders. At home I drink muscle milk, and have no issues with it other than the costs lol. But I work international and those products are not available here. So I pack jugs of Protein Powder. What I have been doing is putting 3 scoops in with 20 ounces of Water and 2 spoons of instant coffee, blend well the night before and having 60 grams of coffee flavored protein for Breakfast. The coffee helps mask the taste and gives me my fix that I wasn't getting before since I quit drinking coffee.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
