After researching for a surgeon I finally became comfortable with the decision to go with Dr. Aceves. I was just setting up my appointment when I was told that Dr. Aceves has been in an accident. For those of you who know and love him I am sorry to report this. I already wrote his coordinator and sent[prayers his way but I have no idea if it is a he just fell down and sprained his ankle or if it is serious. I was told that he could not perform my surgery.

I figure if you know him you may wish to send him your well wishes. meanwhile I am afraid that I will go back to having cold feet. Does anyone have any ideas on how to quickly choose a surgeon? I prefer not to spend several weeks on this again. I a plan to go to Mexico for cost and because it sounds like they have some top notch care. Since I am a revision meaning I will hap the lap band removed I want to go with someone with a lot of experience. I had the band placed over 10 years ago in Monterrey and loved my surgeon but would like to stay close to the West Coast this time. Ideas?

Dr. Aceves passed away in a plane crash last week. I have heard that his assistant surgeon will now be performing the surgeries at his center. I was scheduled with Aceves in early June and cancelled in April to schedule with Dr. Alvarez in Mexico. My choice was made simply based off the length of the plane ride to each surgeon as they are both considered top in their field and have similar pricing. I had a wonderful experience with Dr. Alvarez.

Thank you for your response. It makes me sad even though I didn't know him since I read such wonderful things about him.

Congrats on your surgery I see that you just had it done. It is funny you should mention Dr A since I was jut looing into him. Of course he advertises a lot so maybe that is not that unusual. Where is he located? Do you fly to San Diego to see him also? Do you know if he has any experience with revisions?

After a year of research I had it narrowed down to those two. I live in Alabama. You fly into San Antonio, Texas for Dr. Alvarez. I researched doctors forever. He's got a lot of info on his website, a YouTube channel, radio show and a Facebook group where he talks and answers questions. You just have to do the research and make sure you're comfortable with who you choose. Different surgeons use different methods and have different leak rates and different follow up care. I even did a search here of each surgeon I considered's name to read what people were saying. I did this weekly for a few months. Good luck in choosing a surgeon and scheduling your date!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
