Worried because I haven't found a protein shake yet.

Recommended Posts

I am really nervousness because I haven't found a Protein Shake yet. My surgery is August 11th and I need to figure it out. My main problem is I don't like milk, soy milk or almond milk. Mixing with Water sounds terrible. Is there an option that is like lemonade or grape juice. This is really stressing me out which is harming my frame if mind.

I use the premier Protein ready made shakes. I believe they are lactose free.

Syntrax Nectar makes fruit juice like flavors including a lemonade one (and iced tea and many others).

Thanks. I went to buy the nectar one today but got talked out of it by the salesperson. She said a lot of people don't like it. I will go back and buy the sample. I also will look for the Isopure.

I drink the different Nectars. I don't think they are too bad.

The Nectars aren't my favorites but there aren't many juice like options.

That said I NEVER drank milk pre op. It got me all phlegmy and I didn't like it. Now I am fine with the milk based Protein shakes. I use Syntrax matrix and mix with either NF milk or just Water. Never would have expected to like them pre op. And, well honestly like is a bit strong but I tolerate them just fine.

I don't know if anyone truly LIKES them, they are a means to an end and you find one you can live with, LOL

Muscle milk. The premade ready to drink. I personally like chocolate and vanilla. They are crazy good.

Its bout 3.50 for 4 pack at GNC. X 10 = $35 for 40 count. Bout the same as a 30 supply of any powder Protein for $50.

Doesn't muscle milk have a lot of sugar in it? I recall looking at it a couple of years for my mother who needed a supplement to her diet but was also diabetic. I can't remember for sure, but I believe I didn't buy. It due to sugar content...

After surgery, I developed a strong dislike for the taste of artificial sweetener. So I started adding a little bit of real juice to my Syntrax Nectar to mask the artificial taste and they are a lot better. I also add at least 50% more Water than it says to because everything tastes too sweet to me postop, too. The Isopures were the only thing that ever made me gag postop. I've used both skim milk and water to dilute other RTD shakes like Premier, because again, too sweet and thick for me too drink straight. Have you tried any of the powders mixed with milk or water? You can't really taste the milk anyways.

I haven't "tried" any yet. I am nervous. I do like slim fast made from the powder chocolate but not the ready made. I think I just have to be brave and try some. Wish me luck.

I've tried dozens in order to find the ones I really like and now drink regularly. It's hard because a lot of them only come in big tubs. But Jay Robb, Unjury, Nashua Nutrition, bodybuilding.com, mybariatricpantry.com, and probably a lot of other online stores offer sample packets and starter kits so you can try their products before diving in with a big purchase. A lot of RTD come in 4 packs in most grocery stores. Just be careful to read the labels because a lot of them have more sugar than Protein. Good luck!

Thanks. I went to Vitamin Shoppe today. They actually will give you a credit if you don't like the shake. Someone was actually bringing one back today and they got a credit for another one.

Pre surgery I ONLY could stomach powders I could add milk to. The fruit ones with Water were awful. Immediately after surgery the milk ones made me so nauseous. I only use the ones with water. I tried quite a few and Syntrax Nectar are my favs (pre and post surgery). I will use one scoop in my Blender Bottle with about half water and shake it to get the Protein mixed. Then I fill the rest of the way with a crystal lite-like flavored water. It helps to mask the taste of the protein for me. And, the more you drink it the easier it gets. Hope this helps!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
