Have degenerative knee joints which was part of my decision for RNY on 6/19/14. They look me off anti inflammatory meds pre op. I no longer have surgical pain but my knees are killing me. Ideas to talk to my doctor about?

My experience was that after I lost 20 pounds on the liquid diet, I began to feel relief in my knees. I also was motivated to do the surgery by my knees.

I also have bad knees plus fibromyalgia, osteo arthritis, stenosis of the spine and a few other things and I know that a good pain specialist can give you Patches like Linoderm that you apply to the area for 12 hrs on and 12 hrs off and they will help. There are also other non narcotic ointments that also work.

I say again find a very good pain doctor that you can work with.

I can like you only take Tylenol for the pain because other arthritic meds are not any good for us any more. They can cause ulcers in our pouch.

I hope you can find relief.

I'm going in this week for my semi yearly Synvisc injection. Synvisc and Euflexxa are injections that go under your kneecap and add a cushion of synthetic synovial Fluid. They don't eliminate the pain completely but I'd say the pain is about 40% of what it was before injections.

Check out the synvisc link:

Wow I have the same issues . I didn't know about the patches. Thanks for sharing.

I have lost 40 of the 60 that I need to lose but my knees have been awful this past week. Waking me from sleep. Which is also an issue.

I was hoping to get rid of most of my meds. I have reduce but not eliminated .

I have degenerative joint disease and take a medication called Duexis. It's a combination med that includes an anti-inflammatory with something like Prilosec to help coat the esophogus/stomach. Ask you doctor about it. FYI, it's a very large pill so just be aware....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
