Starting solids july 7- excited but nervous

Recommended Posts

All I was told is to start out with softer foods like eggs, fish, tender cooked chicken and cooked veggies, and add to the list as I go along and as I tolerate those items. I am looking forward to getting to chew food finally, but nervous. What if I am going along and don't end up getting enough daily Protein? Are there ways/tricks to supplement? I am also nervous that when I start solids naturally my calorie intake will increase from what it is now and that I will gain weight. I am also trying to figure out how to time Water between meals and get enough water in for the day without violating the "no water thirty minutes before or after a meal" rule. Thanks in advance for your advice!

i'm only 7 days post, but my nut told me that it's OK and actually good for me to continue on at least one Protein Shake a day, since we are eating very small amounts. it's a surefire way to make sure we are getting protein...i wish you luck! I will be about 2 wks behind you on solids.

My surgeon doesn't have the drinking rule but you will probably be surprised at how little you will be able to eat of the solids. I was so excited to eat soft cooked veggies but all I could eat was 3 baby carrots. Lol

Just take it slow and easy. Take a tiny bite and watch the clock.

Thanks! Good tip about still having one daily shake to ensure Protein intake adequate. And I will eat small bites chew well and take my time. I have noticed in the past I hurry to get things done including eating, since I am always putting kids spouse and work before my personal needs. Since surgery I have started putting my basic needs first which has been hard but guess what? I am still able to meet the other demands in my life even after taking care of myself first :)

The rule is 30 minute after. Drink all you want before hand. It may seem that most have problem going back to real food, but that not the reality. You just dont hear those doing well complaining. As for protien, I had no problem hitting 80 to 100 grams a day. Sixty is the minimun. eggs are 7 grams each along with most meat is 7 grams per once. Add in some cottage cheese and yogurt and your there easy breezy.

Example menu,

breakfast: Greek Yogurt with oat meal 10 grams

Lunch:3 oz chicken 21 grams and a 1/4 cup cottage 7.5 grams

Dinner: 3 oz of the meat of your choice 21 grams

Your .5 from 60 grams in a day

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
