Am only 3 weeks post op and on soft foods at this point. Was wondering at what point will I be able to have salads. I figure that may be a good go to meal when the family decides to do dinner out.

Whenever your doctor clears you for regular solid foods, you should be fine for salads.

i started eating them 4 months post-op. They are my number one go to when I have to eat out with friends or family.

I think I was about a month post op before I tried salads, I never had any issue with them and it makes me feel so much better when I have that instead of anything else.

Thanks to all who responded. I'm eager to get my salad eating started! I typically use French dressing but noticed all the sugar in it :(

What dressing do you use?

Just had my first salad today and I am 7 weeks out. It was delicious! I used a lite vinegarette for dressing. :)

I started salads at 8 weeks. I use only lite cream-based dressings. Oil-based makes me sick. I use lite ranch or lite honey mustard.

I hope I can still use oil..I make my own flavored EVOO. Otherwise I will just go dry.

I use some olive oil for cooking but too much oil makes me sick. Anything fried, etc. I tried oil and vinegar dressing once. Didn't feel good coming back at me!

I've learned to love salad w/o dressing. You can use a little balsamic vinegar, or the popular WW tip - dipping your fork in dressing before taking a bite.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I haver cared from dressings much but loved flavored oils. Oh well I will survive.

My surgeon cautioned me to make sure I always get my Protein first and then, if there is room, eat some salad greens. Because of this, I don't choose salads unless they have Protein on them. I eat the protein first, then the salad greens. Unfortunately, I end up leaving most of the greens on the plate. I love salads, but rarely eat them for this reason.

Like everything else, this varies by clinic. I was not cleared for salads until 6 months, and then just one cup of lettuce (I use Romaine). I have one nearly every day now. I use a light thousand island or light French depending on what sounds good. I add about a Tablespoon of croutons. It was a great day when I could add them back in. Who would have thought you would miss salad!

Well I was cleared for salad at 6 weeks. I started with lettuce and meat. Every time I do a salad now I add a veggie to make sure I am still "good" to eat it. Now up to meat, lettuce, cheese and Tomato.

I think we were told to start 4-6 months out, I cant seem to remember but I did try to eat salad a few times in the last month or so and I am 4 months out...to be honest, I can not tolerate it. It hurts going down and I really dont like the feeling of it. My surgeon/nut say best to eat Proteins and skip the rest. So I just do that...I LOVE salads before surgery but now, I dont enjoy them much cause it hurts going down. They are too rough for my tummy. As far as dressing goes, I use vinaigrettes for my mozzarella cheese and tomatoes for lunch. Creamy ones are too heavy and fattening and sugary. So I stay away from them...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
