anyone have Multiple Sclerosis?

Recommended Posts

I was diagnosed 3 years ago, just wondering I'd anyone else has it too. Surgeon won't do a bypass on me because of my medications.

Hi Lisa,

I too have MS, diagnosed in 2001. My surgeon didn't flat out "refuse" to do RNY, but wasn't real encouraging of it because of the malabsorptive aspects. He left the final decision up to me though, so I researched and then talked to my neurologist about the options. I went with the VSG (Surgery was 4 weeks ago tomorrow) and so far I am very happy.

Which medicine are you taking? I had just switched to Tecfedera about a month before surgery. Rather than deal with the side-effects while trying to recover, we stopped the meds until I'm recovered enough to be on regular foods. Then I will go back to the titration pack and restart the meds. Fingers crossed that I'll be better able to handle it by then!

Welcome to the forum!

I am currently on Avonex injections but will be switching to Gilenya after I lose some weight because I'm on bp med that can't be mixed. I'm also on Tizanidine for my hand spasms and an anxiety med. She talked with their pharmacist and said the meds I need could potentially burn through the newly attached intestines if I had gastric, so she refused for my safety. I'm ok with the sleeve, it's still the tool I need to help lose weight.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
