My family went to quite a few yard sales this weekend and I got so hot that I just chugged my water bottle down in like less than five minutes. Then I thought...I won't be able to do this once I have the surgery. I've always been a big chugger. Am I going to feel hydrated by just sipping?

I have thought the same thing...especially when I was working outside this weekend. I know the sips get bigger over time. One reason I am glad I am having surgery in the a Winter.

Sips will get bigger as time goes on. It used to be impossible for me to drink 50ozs of Water and it still be daylight outside. Now its easy. I can drink 75 oz a day no problem and im 2 months and 2 days out.

I can still drink fast but I can't drink as fast as I could before. I can also drink w/a straw with no trouble. My surgery was 5/30/13 so I was also very concerned about staying hydrated during the summer months. It takes 3 hours to cut my grass w/a push mower, a chore that I love, but I was especially concerned about doing this. I bought a Camel Back backpack-style Water bottle that has a tube system w/a valve that heps prevent swallowing a lot of air. It was about $50 at Dick's Sporting Goods but also available online. I never used it and returned it for a full refund. I found initially that I needed frequent short rest breaks so I had plenty of drinking time during this activity. The backback option is great for hikers, bikers, family vacations, or people who work outside. :-)

For the first 1-6 months while you're healing you really need to drink slowly.

Thank you. I feel now that it is possible. I thought it was for the rest of my life, but now I know it is only for a short time while I am healing. Right? My husband mentioned getting one of the back pack Water bottles while we are outside. I am having my surgery in October, so it should be cooler.

My experience has been the same as Terry's. I am one year post surgery and I can down 20 ounces of Water in about 15 minutes if I am thirsty. Probably a bit slower than pre-surgery, but no sipping. And I have used a straw since week three with no problems. I know they can be problematic for some, but I have never had a problem at all. I had the exact same fear, so I was really glad when it all worked. Listen to your new pouch, it will let you know if it doesn't like something!

I don't know if I am more excited to hear that it will be easy to drink or that I will be able to drink with a straw.

What happens if you drink too quickly after surgery? Do you throw it up?

I would imagine it could injure your healing pouch (if RNY). At the very least it will be painful and you may throw it up. Dehydration is a serious but easily avoidable problem so follow your doctors instructions...

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
