Bypass or Sleeve. Times running out

Recommended Posts

Hi

I'm scheduled for surgery July 22 , been at the process for a year now. I picked gastric a year ago at seminar now to find out about the sleeve was told gastric takes off more weight. But I like the idea of benefits of actually using my stomach. Can some help me. Is sleeve a good choice. I'm 280. Want to be 190. Nervous n confused waited to long and have no one to talk to. Thanks so much Dan

I did the sleeve as I didn't want my intestines to be affected. What did your surgeons suggest?

I took the sleeve because I did not want to have a lap band port or have my intestines recongigulated. The sleeve has work well for me, and I am happy with that decision. Whatever you decide, I wish you good luck and good health

Why cause malabsorption of Vitamins and minerals and the dumping syndrome if you don't have to... and be successful?

I choose the sleeve because I did not want to deal with malnutrition and dehydration issues, I think the success rate for sleeve is pretty high and most importantly my digestive system is intact! I started at 280 surgery was 2/20/14, today I weigh 211. I hope to get down to 155, I am 5'10". I just felt safer with the sleeve, best thing I have ever done for myself!!!

Knowing several people that had RNY, they have all had malabsorption issues and dumping. With the sleeve I like the idea of having a functional stomach without rerouting my intestines! I would think that for males it would be advantageous too for eating appropriate Protein amounts and working out plus calorie consumption needs would be easier met with the sleeve.

I chose the sleeve because it seemed less invasive to me. No malabsorption , no rerouting of intestines. I guess statistically you may lose slightly more, but at a certain point, both surgeries are just tools, and it's how hard YOU work with your tool -not which tool you chose- that will make you successful in the long run.

As for me, I started at 278.4 and 9 months later I am 148 & almost at goal (3 more pounds) with the sleeve.

Both can be successful, just depends on what YOU do with them. Statistically RNY patients lose about 10% more, but I've already lost more than either statistic. I chose sleeve because I didn't want the malabsorption. I'm happy with my choice, but I'm having a hard time with the last few pounds and sometimes I wonder if I would have done better with the RNY. Also, I have to really make a conscious effort to eat the right things. I can tolerate absolutely everything, so there is no deterrent to eating ice cream, cake, etc. Also, I'm a grazer by nature, and RNY is a better choice for people like me. I knew that going in, but I chose the sleeve anyway. One other thing - you can never take NSAIDS with RNY, but you can with the sleeve. That was a big consideration for me. I don't want to get into old age and have limits on medications that I may need. Again, I'd make the same decision again, but I think those are things to consider.

I'm scheduled for July 17th. I've been going to the area support group and talking with others. My surgeon is highly recommended in NC and even my OB/GYN who is 82 highly recommends him and is in support of the sleeve. I'm 5'4, 223. Of course everyone says I'm too small to weigh as much as I do , blah, blah, blah, but I'm 34, large boned and want to run with my almost 9 year old! The Dr. Said with the sleeve I won't get too skinny too fast which may help and give my skin time to catch up without being too droopy. If they move my date up I will let you know how it goes. I'm out all summer as I'm a teacher. Good luck. :)

I'm planning to do the sleeve because the rerouting of my intestines freaks me out and the sleeve is supposed to have a lot fewer complications than the bypass. I was told I wouldn't be able to take NSAIDS with the sleeve either. Because your stomach is so much smaller, there is less space to absorb and digest the NSAIDS and the smaller stomach kind of gets a concentrated dose. I already have acid reflux so I'm probably at higher risk for ulcers.

Maybe it depends on the person. I know the surgeons are supposed to give us all these warnings and make us take every precaution, but I like hearing this stuff from people that have already had the surgery. I highly doubt my surgeon had this surgery themselves so they can't actually give any first hand experience on some things. Thanks Michiganchic for letting me know there is hope. BTW, they did tell me I would be able to take Tylenol. That's the only one.

I chose the sleeve because its less invasive and less complications. I was severely overweight and the RNY was suggested but I didnt feel comfortable with that. So now I sm down 200 pounds but still more to go. This is where the tool is the tool and I gotta make good choices. Also I could still get the RNY if I didnt like these results but so far Im glad I sleeved. Good luck!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
