Possible to get stuck on liquids?

Recommended Posts

Monday will be one week post op for me and I've been struggling w liquids :( I'm having trouble drinking the minimum 48oz the dr requires...I make 20 to 30 on a good day. Still feel very bloated and tight. I was drinking warm tea this morning w Splenda n all of a sudden I felt really nauseated and like I had a rock in my chest. I walked for about half hour before I felt some relief by burping...I was sweating and kept bringing up a lot of phlegm like substance but it wasn't phlegm. After this episode I was so exhausted like id been hit by a bus tht I had to take a nap. Is this what getting stuck feels like and if so, is it possible to get tea stuck!???

I dont know whether to feel sorry for you are be jealous (teasing). Everyday past surgery I feel like I could eat a steak dinner with all the trimmings.

Amazing how different for all of us. I do hope you feel better soon.

That's EXACTLY how I feel! I'm 12 days post op & can barely drink let alone eat anything. Today I tried drinking a half of cup of broth & immediately started getting sick. This has happened 2 other times today but then I was just trying to sip Gatorade. I threw up this white foamy stuff. I posted earlier about not eating or drinking for 4 days & went to the doc yesterday. They pulled a cc of "primary fluid" out. They said this rarely happens but I felt so restricted & miserable. I feel better today that's why I tried the broth. I swear I don't ever think I'll ever get past liquids! Lol They called me in some Levsin to help my stomach. I think you should def call your doc.

I would call your practitioner. You should be able to drink tea, coffee, Water, and broth with no problem.

Not exactly "Stuck" with liquids.....but can feel like it at times....

Imagine a funnel....you can pour liquids into it, and as long as you don't pour too much to fast, it will pass through the narrow opening without any trouble.....

Now pour a large amount into the funnel...what happens? It sits there for it to pass and eventually go down...OR...it can overflow over the top onto the floor.....

Also the consistency of the liquid matters also...water to a milkshake....

Everyone's opening is different size...some smaller, some larger....the band is adjustable.....so the experience will vary from individual to individual....

If you are recently banded, then it is probably still swelling that is making you tight....either way you need to slow your drinking down....

I have no problems or complaints with my band, but when drinking Water I have learned not to gulp....and I still forget at times, especially at the gym or doing yard work in the sun....

I don't thnk I'm at the point of ready to call my dr yet. It's was very bothersome for about half hour and have been drinking crystal light the remainder of the day with no issues. I don't thnk it's the point if being too restricted cuz my dr doesn't put any fluids in til a while later...4 weeks I think.

I got banded on the 20th and dont feel a bit restricted. I did gulp down a whole glass of Water and noticed I had some little burbs but that is it. I am thinking you are very swollen.

If your band doesn't have any Fluid in it, it's probably just the inflammatory reaction to the procedure that is giving you a lot of restriction. This should die down with each day. I'm over a year post-op and can get stuck on liquids after a fill, due to the inflammation from the fill. If I sip, rather than gulp, this doesn't happen.

Also, I might avoid Crystal Light because it is acidic and you want to have your stomach environment as peaceful as possible after getting banded, to help in recovery. (Avoid tomatoes and Tomato products, too.) Water is the best, most calming liquid you can be taking in right now.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
