Congrats to both of you! It's an amazing journey. I was really nervous too! The biggest thing for me is that I've never succeeded at weight loss, so I figured I'd screw this up too. But it turns out if you screw this up, you can make it right without much sweat. It's a learning curve, and we aren't perfect...but look! I'm down almost 2 pounds a week on average since I was banded!

Who's your doc in Houston?

Hi all,

I was banded in January, 2007 I remember being very apprehensive before my surgery. You will both do just fine... Let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Pouch Dilation:

I thought I needed another fill. I could eat way too much. so I went to the fill person and she just added .2cc. Then I drink the barium and we watched it on the fluoroscope....just sit there and not go through! She compared my last flouro pic with this one, and my pouch was much bigger this time (pouch dilation). I was scared! I thought I had ruined the surgery! She was so calm, like she sees this every day. She said to go back on liquids for 3 days and it would go back to normal, and she was right. I guess if it goes on too long it can become permanent, but the pouch stretching is a fairly common thing. I thought and thought about everything I had eaten...Had I ignored signs I was full and packed that pouch with too much food? Well, it turns out that the last fill that I had was a bit too much, and even Water was sitting too long in the pouch before going down, stretching the pouch. Some people even have their band unfilled and start over to let the pouch shrink. I didn't have to. I had been slugging down a Protein Drink in the mornings (I'm an early riser), and I'm one of those people who have a lot aof restriction in the early morning. So I changed my Breakfast to a few hours later, and just sipped on Water before Breakfast. I might have done better getting a bit unfilled, but as it turned out, I was losing weight, so the band lossened up a bit on it's own as I lost stomach fat. Anyway, I'm where I need to be....

I meet with the surgeon today. I was scheduled for May 3rd but it has been moved up to April 30th. My doctor is Clifton Thomas.

He is with Obesity Surgery Specialist.

My surgery will be at Renaissance Hospital.

He doesn't do the pre-op diet, which is fine with me.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
