I'm 4 weeks post -op. I'm wondering when people talk about not eating bread are they talking about after they get several fills or after surgery. I haven't gotten a fill yet, and fell like I can eat anything including bread at this point without getting stuck. Is it just white bread or any kind? Do you not eat it because of the stuck feeling or because it's carbs? I need answers.

I'm 2.5 years out and I can eat bread as long as I eat small and chew a lot. Most of us were the same as you until we got enough fills to start to feel restriction. Some can't tolerate bread at all. Bread can ball up in your pouch and cause long stuck episodes if not eaten like a Bandster.

Bread is OK in small amounts whether it's white(highly processed and no nutrition) or whole wheat(still processed but offers some fiber). Carbs, and mostly simple carbs like flour is processed in your body very rapidly and is turned into sugar causing insulin spikes. When the spike is over, the crash can make you even hungrier than before. You'll find yourself reaching for more carbs. Carbs are addictive, imo. I love em, but try to stay away from simple carbs as much as possible.

Before I started getting fills I could do ok with any kind of bread , then when I started getting fills I couldn't my band said No , however if it is whole wheat and toasted almost burnt I can eat it if I take REALLY SMALL BITES , I also don't eat it much any more because it is carbs and will make me gain over night I found out I also don't do most things that are white because the starch and carbs , I Love tortillas corn or flour and my band says NO to them soI had to give them up , there are certain foods I gave up but I LOVE the being able to move , being healthy , having energy and wearing smaller sizes so I don't mind giving some foods up .

I ate a very low carb diet the first 4 months banded and lost nearly 40lbs. When I started eating carbs again I did put some weight back on. I totally suggest just staying away from them. They don’t really agree with the band anyway. I think people are talking about when they have restriction mostly.

Here is the caveat when it comes to bread and bread like products. If they are soft and doughy no matter how much you chew them there is always going to be some chance that it can get stuck. Even a tiny bit can get down there and then swell up in the stoma and cause a very uncomfortable feeling.

That said I will tell you that I eat bread though not much of it, (simply because I have no desire for it) when I do I usually make sure that it is toasted and not doughy in any way. So I don't eat Bagels or rolls or Buns since even when you toast them the inside can remain soft and doughy.

Thanks for the info. I think I was really asking for peace of mind. Staying away from bread will be easier for me if I know I can have it as strange as that sounds.

Another thing.....I don't have a craving for bread often but if I do I usually have a Quesadilla and so long as I chew well it goes through and is satisfying! That thin "bread" seems to be ok.

bread, and everything related...donuts, cakes, Pasta, Bagels, rolls, tortillas, etc, etc, not to forget pizza, was the first thing to go, and I have not had any in almost 4 years now......

Bottom line, I feel better off without it.

The same went for red meat....better off all around,

The only thing I can eat, are crackers...but even then, they have to be a certain brand.

I don't do bread. I have read too many horror stories and I would just as soon avoid the dramz. When I start craving on bread-like substances to the point where I neeeeed something of the sort, I go for Melba toast or a corn tortilla... Maybe a few crackers. These things go down just fine for me and satisfy my insane bread cravings. Kinda. Sorta. In a way. I Love, love, love bread. I admit, it is one food that I miss so much. Sometimes my husband will bring home a loaf of fresh, warm artisan bread to munch on and I will just stand in the kitchen and hold the loaf up to my face and inhale that rich, warm, yeasty, bread scent. Ooooooh....

Yeah. I know. :P

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
