not your usual protein shake question

My surgeon's office says I can only use their Protein Shakes since surgery. They sell Bariatric Advantage and Celebrate mixes. They are 45 dollars a tub. I prefer the Protein Shake I was getting from sam's club. What is everyone using after their surgery?

Hi

I don't know what that is all about but I have gotten my shakes from Sam's club - the Premier Protein ones - I love the chocolate and I am 11 weeks post op and my nutritionist was so happy with my protien intake she just lowered me down to 1 a day. Great cost savings but somedays I still have 2. Maybe you should ask if there is a particular reason it has to be their shakes. Good luck.

I have HMR shakes, and they are pretty good. My Surgeons office sells the Bariatric Advantage too... but I wasn't 'required' to get them.

Harley,

I can't (obviously) speak for all Dr offices, but mine didn't mandate Bariatric Advantage or anything. Like most, I ended up using Premier Protein shakes post surgery and really loved the chocolate as well. The one thing my Nutritionist said was to be sure and read the label.

She didn't care which brand but wanted me to stick to whey Protein. The Premier Protein Shakes primary ingredient (as I recall) was Soy Protein. The nutritionist's (and her phamplets) reasoning was that Whey protein is supposedly more easily absorbed by the body post-op.

I can't call this anything BUT coincidence, but about a week after surgery, I was 100% Premier Protein shakes when my body kicked off a Gout flare up, which they couldn't treat directly and took weeks to get over.

Now, I'm back to powders for the moment (mostly Six-Star and Body Fortress) but miss the convenience of a chill-and-go premixed Premier shake...

I've used since after surgery Jay Robb Whey Protein Powder.< /p>

It comes in chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and one other flavor.

I get it from Amazon, but it is sold directly from the company and at Whole Foods.

I mix it either with Torani sugar fee syrups which I get directly from the company or PB2 Peanut Butter powder or the PB2 chocolate peanut butter powder. Torani comes in a multitude of flavors.

PB2 can be gotten at Target or the grocery store.

I find it silly that you must purchase from the surgeons office. I have never heard of that before.

They probably want you to use theirs because they can keep better track of what you're getting that way. There are plenty of other ones on the market that work just as well. I say use what you like, as long as it has what you need in it. I use Body Fortress and I get it at Wal-Mart. Its cheaper and it does what I need it to.

I agree if it has everything in it that I need, I should be able use anyone I chose.

Thanks for the heads up. I will keep an eye on it. so far so good but I will say I have been having some "chunky" shakes lately and finally called premier. They said they were aware of the issue and once I gave them the lot # and time stamp - they will replace my last 3 cases. I think the convenience and taste is why I love them.

My surgeon says we can keep drinking them to make we get our all Protein in. I know some surgeons are different and they want a person to get all their protein from food. I'm going to keep drinking them, I can't eat 80 grams of protein a day.

I am using the Syntrax nectar brand of powder Protein and the premade Protein drinks made by CytoSport, I get them both at the Vitamin shoppe. I also drink the premade pure Protein shakes from Wal-mart. Also the Protein Powder from True Nutrition on their website.

Yep. They MADE me buy all of those Bariatric Advantage things and I had a hard time with them before the surgery and even worse time after. I had been using the Premier Protein which I liked before surgery but now can't stand them.

I think it is just a money making ploy. They say it's so they know exactly what you are taking, but I'm just not so sure about that.

In between the shakes, Soup, bars and all of the Vitamins I paid $450.00. Money down the drain.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
