Going out post op

Recommended Posts

It was weird going out with husband and a large group of friends the other night for happy hour and ordering dinner.

My husband and I got a plate of fish tacos to share. It came with two tacos and a side of black Beans. We ate the insides of one of the tacos and a bit of the black Beans that were on the side. That was actually too much for me.

The shells and the other taco we took home. The beans were too difficult to transport.

My husband took the inside of the leftover tacos for lunch at work and I made the kids Breakfast with the leftover corn tortilla shells.

Before we both would have ordered something and eaten it all.

It is amazing the difference in what and how much we eat. It also interesting how large a what I considered normal plate of food pre op looks now.

It was hard to find something we could eat on the menu also. He is not cleared for raw veggies so we had to ask for them to cook the cabbage on the tacos. Most the food was fried or had bread or another starch or sugar.

What have been your experiences with going out with friends or to a restaurant?

Do you find that there are less healthy choices than you thought there were presurgery?

My boyfriend and I choose our restaurants carefully since surgery, so that we both have healthy choices for food. We both like sushi, so I will have tuna tataki and a little edamame and he will have sashimi. He hasn't had surgery, but eats a lot like I do for other health reasons. We don't eat out as much as we used and and we both take at least half our food home when we do. This for me is funny since I have never liked leftovers. Now, I just think of leftovers as the next 2 meals for me. It's amazing to me now when I look at a plate of food, who much we both used to be able to eat. Now I eat a fraction of the plate. We haven't eaten out with friends yet, but I have eaten out during business travel and take my food back to my hotel room with me. We have plenty of healthy choices for restaurants where we live, we just choose to drive past the Five Guys Burgers, buffets and other fast food places now.

The kids and I went to Chili's the other night. There were lot of choices to pick from. I was pleased. I got some mexican chicken bowl and only ate about 1/4 of it. The kids ate the leftovers the next day. It's a win win.

I've also eaten at Outback and just had chicken and veggies.

I'm amazed that the appetizers I use to absolutely love don't phase me any more. I don't have the urge to eat them at all.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
