Pre op surgery weightloss

Recommended Posts

Confused by the process. Met with surgeon 2 weeks ago. Went to the 1st of 3 required classes for insurance. No one has given me a pre op diet or an expected or suggested an amount of weight I have to lose before surgery. I think the class they started me in was a week 3 class. I have a 45 bmi and several comorbid conditions. Thinking I need to call someone but not sure if it's the surgeon or the 3 month program. Besides the class I just need my psych evaluation . They already have my dr consent form. Any suggestions. 2 nd class is on July 8

HMMMM from what I can tell on here, not all insurance companies require a 3 or 6 month supervised weight loss program (mine DOES require a 3 month one that I'll start on 07Jul)...and there seems to be lots of variability between surgeons as well. Perhaps you should just come right out and ask at your next class....that way there aren't any surprises when you least expect them...

Generally, the nutritionist has a revolving series of classes. You don't necessarily hit the 1st class first. They'll go over the pre-op diet and other things you need to know in the subsequent classes.

A particular amount of pounds to lose is not usually specified. A surgeon may require anywhere from 0 days to 2 week Clear liquids only diet (with protein) to shrink the liver to make it easier to not to damage it during the surgery.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
