Losing weight the old fashioned way (with a little help)

Recommended Posts

Dear Friends,

I had become utterly dismayed with my band. For so long it was too tight, causing me to become a maladaptive eater. I basically drank sugary liquids instead of eating food. While I didn't gain weight, I didn't lose either. Finally, I saw the lap band nutritionist and I've lost 15 pounds in a couple of weeks by cutting sugar and counting calories on MyFitnessPal. The app has helped me tremendously and I am back on track. Just had my band tightened a tiny bit (had it loosened a lot a few weeks ago) and now I feel I am FINALLY in the green zone. Not too loose, not too tight. I am getting full sooner but not throwing up.

Feels good to be starting over again.

I'm excited for you. I had a complete unfilled last Aug and gained 35-40lbs. After being down almost 100lbs. I've been going to get little fills since. It sucks but haven't gained since April. Fingers crossed he adds some Fluid on July 2nd and doesn't cancel my appt since they do that at times. It's hard when my husband is down 200lbs and we had our surgeries 2 weeks apart.

Good for you! Hopefully the right people will see your message and realize that the band is not meant to be so tight that you stop eating real food. It's a tool to help us eat less and be satisfied. And most of all, healthy!

I eat (and drink) what I want, when I want....not just like the pig I used to be....more the way a normal should,,,which brought me back to a normal weight,,,,and a normal healthy lifestyle with nutritious food and plenty of exercising, not ever having to worry about diets and weight loss again....(as long as the band remains the same)

Best thing that can possibly happen.....

So happy for you! And isn't it great that our bands are adjustable? Here's to eating real food. Well-chewed good food in the right amount and stopping. Best wishes for a wonderful summer.

I love myfitnesspal! Helped preop as well! I am soooo looking forward to eating some real food. Some variety.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
