Why am I hungry and not loosing!

Recommended Posts

Hello

I went through pre-op diet and lost 22lbs in two weeks. Had surgery on the 20th (June) and been on post op clear liquid diet 5 days and have not lost a pound. Matter of fact day after surgery I gained 4 to 5 pounds back.

I have been following the rules of the liquids. I record what I eat and use my fitness pal to tally my caloric intake. It has been only about 300 calories per day the last 4 days. I am HUNGRY but not allowed to eat.

This is trying my patience for real. I thought maybe retaining fluids but my ankles don't seem swollen.

I am hungry and feel like I should of lost a little more not gained since surgery. Did anyone else go through this?

Thanks for taking the time to read this,

Colleen

If you're only taking in 300 calories a day your body is going into starvation mode which shocks the body. Your body is hanging onto every calorie instead of burning it off. You're going to have to increase your calorie intake probably to about 1000 calories a day . Speak to your surgeon or nutritionist or a registered dietician . Your body is craving for nutrition. Good luck on your journey !

I say all of this with understanding and support so….

1) Stay off the scale….

2) According to my doc (and yes, they are ALL different)…the first 6 weeks post surgery is for healing and getting your new eating mechanics down…they are NOT concerned about any weight loss….so any loss is a bonus.

3) You had surgery 5 days ago….come now…if I may ask…how long did it take for you to get to the weight that made you choose WLS….it is NOT going to come off 5 days after surgery.

4) This is not a magic wand…it is a tool and it will take you time to find the perfect spot for optimal weight loss for you…..

5) Everyone IS different….you could be retaining Fluid from surgery…give yourself and your body time to heal….its not even one week yet!

6) I agree with @@dawalsh your body has had a big shock with just the surgery alone…then it had the pre-op and now you are giving it very little calories/nutrition. Your body may be holding on to everything you put in your system because it does not know exactly what is going on yet.

7) If you are concerned check in with your doctor or nutritionist…they are the ones to help most right now!

Of course we are here to help….but please cut yourself some slack!!!!!

It's TOTALLY NORMAL for a lot of us to "gain" a couple/few pounds right after surgery....think of all those bags of liquids they pumped into you during surgery.

For me, it was a week pre and POST op of Clear Liquids...less than 100 calories per day for two weeks. I didn't go into starvation mode....my body found LOTS of excess fat to live on those weeks.

Hang in there for a few more days, following your surgeons recommended "diet".....it'll get better!! Best wishes :)

Please please read the post-op posts from others. Gaining is the norm. I'm 14 weeks post op and losing like crazy. I gained at first. Check my ticker. This thing works! Do your part. Exercise every day and follow your food plan. Mine was six weeks of liquids. Thought it lasted forever, but it was so worth it.

You're in the hardest part now. Grit your teeth, follow directions, exercise and keep posting here. You'll be amazed in one month, I promise!

Take a breath! You just had major surgery during which you were pumped full of fluids and drugs and you suffered major trauma to your body. Not only is it perfectly normal for you to not have lost any weight at this point, it is perfectly normal for you to have gained a few pounds. Pounds comprised mainly of water/fluid that will fall away as your body heals and throws off the excess Fluid load that was pumped in pre op, during your procedure and afterward.

My advice is like earlier posters. Please cut yourself a break and stay off of your scale, love. You should not be worrying your head about your numbers. Just concentrate on healing and learning how to live La Vida Lap Band. :D I didn't even step on a scale until I was weighed at my first aftercare appointment, a month after my surgery.

The band works. If you work it, it works. Relax, trust the process, trust your band and most importantly, trust yourself. It will happen. For now, take the pressure off of yourself and just... Breathe. :D

Thank you band-ster team, I needed that.

Sometimes my brain goes on floored overdrive and I want to go about 200 mph to lap-band land, where I can use my cooking skills and cook healthy small meals and use the band help me do it.

Regardless, like everyone else I will have to continue to click off one day at a time until I get there. Some days just get a person climbing the walls and today was my day.

Icy one, you aren't so Icy underneath. ; )

Everything you are feeling, all of those thoughts are so normal! We have all felt them, had to turn around, shout them down and tell them to SHUT UP! I'm, healing, here!

It feels as if it will be forever until you can put your coking skills to work then, one day, that day will be there, you will make up a beautiful meal, sit down and savor every little bite. Until your band tells you to stop. ;) Just give it time. And enjoy the ride. You only do this, once.

And, shhh... You're going to mess up my cred. ;)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
