Meralgia Peraesthestica - Or Numb Thigh after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am now 8 days post op and slowly feeling better. I saw my doc for the first post op appointment today, all going well. I did ask about this numbness in my left thigh that has been persistent since the surgery. He said it is called Meralgia Peraesthestica and can last anywhere form a couple months to the very rare times when it does not go away.

Anyone have an issue with this - and did it get better or worse? How long did you have it for and how long did it take for this numbness (like your whole upper thigh has fallen asleep - and won't wake up) to subside?

Thanks for any feedback!!

I did a little research. This can be caused by pressure on the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, and can result from tight clothing, weight gain or injury. I wonder if it might have something to do with having your abdomen filled up with CO2 during surgery. This could create pressure on the nerve that causes the condition. It could also be the swollen/distended sleeve that is pushing on the nerve.

I'm going to ask my surgeon during my follow up next week to get his opinion as well.

I had numbness/tingling in both outer thighs for 2 weeks after surgery. I addressed it with my surgeon and he said it was neuropathy due to obesity. I have had this issue many times prior to surgery so it made sense ...

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
