Ok guys I'm 1 week & 1 day post op. I went for my follow up yesterday & was told I could move on to mushies. Yay! So super excited I came home & fixed me some instant mashed potatoes. Big mistake! I felt like heck after eating them. I think it's bc I prob ate too fast, they may not have been "thin" enough & I didn't drink anything with them. So finally around 9:30 this morning (that was at 3:00 the day b4) I was able to tolerate an instant Carnations Breakfast drink. I did fine all day & thought I would try the potatoes again. Even bigger mistake!! I thinned them up really good, drank some Water with them & only had maybe 5 bites. Omgosh! Y'all I think I'm dying! I'm hurting so bad! I started burping & dry heaving to the point of tears & tinkle but no vomit. So now I'm freaking out bc they drill it into our heads NOT TO THROW UP! What if my band slipped during all that madness?!?!? Would I be able to tell? Help!

When the band talks, we have to listen -- and you are getting a prime example of that right now. Your body does not want those potatoes. Maybe later in the game, but many people eliminate the whites -- wheat, potatoes, pastas, rice, etc. -- as those carbs are not really good choices anyway. I hope you're feeling better (and if not call the doctor!) but know that many of us had a learning curve for finding out what is band-friendly. Sorry you had to go through this. My first one was beets. We are all different. You may want to back up a stage to continue full liquids a few days then ease into something other than potatoes. Good luck -- you are on your way! And do call it in if you're nervous -- they are there for you, your medical professionals.

That's scary. And I bet really uncomfortable, too. So sorry to hear. I never had any problems but I went two weeks on liquids and two weeks on soft foods. Maybe it is just too soon for any soft foods? Or did you have trouble with the Carnation Instant? If so, call your doctor's office and report this. It could be that something is wrong and needs attention! You shouldn't have to suffer like that and I'm sure you will be really paranoid to drink anything after this! GOOD LUCK!! (Take things SLOW!!)

I agree.... stay away from potatoes, pastas and breads!!! I haven't had any of those things and don't plan to. You don't need those calories or carbs!!! My surgery was Feb. 17th of this year. I just had my second fill yesterday (Monday the 23rd). I'm down 48 lbs so far.

@@Crystal76 Sorry you are having so much discomfort. When I was banded I was on liquids for 2 weeks. Everyone is different and even though the doc said it's ok to move on to mushy foods your probably still very swollen.

Mashed potatoes is really not the best choice of food to start with, you want to find foods that have Protein in them and potatoes are all carbs. Give yourself a few days to allow the swelling to ease a bit more stick to the liquids for a day or two more. When you move to the mushy foods again think "blender". Get one if you don't have one, and put things in it for a beat or two until they are smooth and thin.

Try to choose things like thick Soups blend up the chunks. A favorite of mine was chili thrown in the blender. Wendy's makes a great chili, pre-measured so your not having to make a huge pot of it but if you are go for Turkey meat. Throw that into the blender for a second or two you can get some fat free sour cream if you like and enjoy.

Well today was no better. I was barely able to sip Water let alone think about food. I finally called the doctor this afternoon & they called me in some Levsin. If I'm not felling better they want me to come in Friday morning. I did fine on the Carnations & was planning on doing that this morning but that didn't happen. I'm not hungry I'm just about to thirst to death! They said I could have stage 2 baby food but surely there's something better whenever I do get ready, no time soon tho! Thank you all for responding.

I was on liquids for 3 weeks post surgery so you may just want to be very liquidy with the foods. I started with soft scrambled eggs. I think instant potatoes expand so might not be the best choice. Hope you do better in a few days.

Hi crystal76

Poor you, I thought I was having a bad time.

Today I took my paracetamol half an hour before eating and the pain wasn't as bad. But I only ate a little.

Keep me up to date, would be nice to hear your experience as we started our journey so close together.

Good luck.. Hope we succeed

Romana

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
