Low blood pressure after Gastric Sleeve

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone my name is Monika, I had surgery on June 17, 2014. My surgeon was Dr. John Feng, who I might say, is awesome!!! I've been doing okay so far, still have some pain, but weaning myself off of the pain meds. I have to take potassium chloride for 2 weeks which is some nasty stuff to drink. I woke up this morning, unusually tired, had my Protein shake and laid back down after a couple of hours. When I woke up the second time, I felt weak and not like myself. i ended up checking my blood pressure and it was 88/59 which I have not had in years!! I did not drink my potassium last night, because I just couldn't stomach it. I don't know if that had anything to do with my blood pressure and how I feel right now..Anyone else had issues with that? I have a hard time getting all my Protein and liquids in, but I work hard at it. Yesterday I increased my distance of walking and I did okay, but did not want to push it because I started feeling pressure in my abdominal area.I guess my weight is coming off slow and steady, which is fine with me. I'm still having a hard time knowing when I had enough, especially when drinking the shakes. I don't feel hungry at all, I drink my shakes because it's that time not because I feel hungry. I could probably go the whole day without feeling any hunger pangs. I don't know if that is normal.Would love to hear any advice, how any of your journeys are going, any problems since surgery anything at all. :) Can't have enough support :) Wishing everyone a wonderful and blessed day.

I had my sleeve on June 17 also and I, too, am having a hard time trying to get in the Protein. I tried a couple different shakes and have stuck with the choc. powder from Walmart. Some of them have an awful aftertaste. I just had a sugar-free popsicle today and love it! I don't feel hungrey at all, either. I just know I am to keep hydrated so work at it all day.I have not had any problems since surgery. I am trying to not pick at the plastic that I was closed with. I see my surgeon, (also fantastic), Thursday. Can't wait to progress a little to pureed. I only took pain med for the first 3 days, just didn't need it. Don't need a new problem! You should probably say something to your MD about your BP being so low.

I can't address post-op issues yet, but I think it would be a good idea to let your doctor know about how low the blood pressure is!

I've seen loads of posts about Protein powders being hard to tolerate, especially right after surgery. You may want to ask your NUT about two products mentioned on this site, ProSource liquid Protein, available from Amazon and First Option Medical,http://www.firstoptionmedical.com which was reportedly used in the hospital, mixed with Crystal Lite.

Also, ProSource Plus Liquid Protein, available from Amazon and http://www.healthykin.com. I'm still doing research on these to find out what the difference is between the ProSource and ProSource Plus. .

They are unflavored, liquid and mix in either cold OR hot. I thought this might be a good alternative to purchasing very expensive ready-to-drink bottles containing Protein for a Clear liquids phase.

Hope this helps!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
