Rachael C Starting out....

Recommended Posts

so, I am all set up with my initial appointment so I will add to this thread as I go.

I have been overweight for about 20 years. I am 42 and recently within the last two years I have found that while I can starve myself to lose 20 lbs in several weeks, it effortlessly comes back and then some and I have learned that I am somewhat of an emotional eater.

I had Kaiser insurance for the last 6 years and I was not covered for WLS so I just accepted that I would be this weight.

A recent visit with my new DR, and she talked to me about WLS and I of course said, oh I cant my Ins wont cover it...she left the room and came back with a surprise for me that under my new plan, I was covered.

on June 5th I contacted OWLS, Oregon Weightloss Surgery Center and was later contacted by the staff of Dr Emma Patterson. A few short (grueling) weeks later, I am set up with all my apts and I will see the surgeon later in July.

On that June 5th apt, I found out that my borderline diabetes has now been diagnosed as full blown type 2 diabetes and my High blood pressure and metabolic syndrome are all life threatening life shortening diagnosis.....I am terrified of the surgery due to my not having any surgeries in my entire life, but I know that without this, I will not be here much longer and I want to watch my 6 grandchildren grow up....i want to be here for my daughters to watch them raise this kids and be here to help them!

I bought, The big book on Gastric Sleeve and I read it every day....I am shooting for a surgery date in August or sooner and I look forward to becoming successful for once at getting this 190 lbs off my body so I can start living my life again.

UPDATE~

So I completed my psych eval Friday June 27th. That was my last appointment before scheduling with the surgeon. This morning my apt was set with my Surgeon and I will be seeing her on July 15th. From what I am told she is about one month booked out so the soonest I can get in for surgery will be about mid August which is what I had in mind anyhow!
I am so excited. For the next two weeks I am on a low cal low carb NO sugar diet...then I will be on the liquid diet prior to the surgery so basically life as i knew it is now over...amen!!!!!

Hey, I'm at Legacy Weight Management too! I am using Dr. Halpin. Their entire staff have been great. I have my surgeon consult on July 7th. The ball has been moving pretty fast for me. Glad your insurance is going to help out. Best of luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
