Grits.. to be or not to be?

Grits are.. I think.. a type of wheat chopped up really fine, with Water added to it.

No honey, grits are made from corn! But you're right, they're similar to Cream of Wheat in texture, except a little grittier (no pun intended!). :hungry:

I always forget what it's made of, I thought it was corn or wheat, but some reason seems like last time I had this conversation someone said wheat.

But now that you mentioned hominey, I remember that now. And yet I hate hominey.

This Georgia Girl would give up the band before the grits. Have a good time with them.

For the record, grits are made from corn that is ground medium fine. You put salt and butter on them, sometimes ham or bacon in them. Or you can mix them in your fried eggs over easy and chopped fine.

And fried fish with cole slaw and a side of cheese grits is a classic Southern comfort food meal.

Whatever you do, don't put milk and sugar on them. You might as well tattoo "Yankee" on your forehead.

Here's a description of grits I found on the web.

Usually a Breakfast item in the US Southern region. Made from the kernel of corn. When corn has been soaked in lye and the casing has been removed it becomes Hominy. The lye is rinsed out very well and the corn is left to harden. Then the swollen hominy is ground up to the texture of tiny pellets. When boiled with Water, milk and butter it becomes a Cereal similar to cream of wheat. It's used as a side dish for a good old fashioned Southern breakfast. ...

I lived in Birmingham, Alabama for a couple years and I did the grits thing. I now "comprehend" grits. I love 'em. My favorite is cheese Grits. But actually, you can eat grits in many ways. There's Molasses Grits, Mushroom Grits, Grits with Butter, Fried Grits, Grits with Raisins, chicken Grits, Pork Grits, Grits Patties, Grits and Okra .......

Hi, I too am from the south. South Ga. I LOVE grits and have no problems with them. My doc. does though...that is with me eating them. He says they're good and filling but nothing but carbs. No Protein. But I do eat them occasionally with scrambled eggs ( protein).

I like chicken thank goodness. It stays down fairly well most of the time. So do shrimp and crab. Not so with steak and porkchops. Upchuck every time! Dang!

I've found that my tastes have changed though. I now crave fish.Crab is my new fav. I had it Sat. night at Ruby Tuesdays'. The appetizer...the lump crab cake......it was just the perfect size.

Another thing that has protein and is very filling is oatmeal. I used to despise it. YUCK!!! Now I absolutely LOVE it. I was upset this morning when I got up and was out. My fav. Breakfast nowadays.

It's been almost 7 months now and each day is a new experience with my food.< /p>

Grits..YES for me! I had them on the mushy stage and they are pretty easy to eat if they aren't too thick. Now I can't eat breakfast at all..it's just too tight that early. But later in the day I can eat them no problem. Also my favorite too!!

I've never had something 'sweet' with grits, and heard that's a yankee thang. YUCK!! Sounds horrible since I am use to it with meat, cheese, butter.. We lived in New Mexico for 2 years and they didn't sell the 'flavored' grits packs.. you could only buy it plain, was a bummer. We moved back to Alabama last year, and I was happy to have my selection of grits w/butter grits w/ham etc..

Scrambled eggs mixed with bits of bacon and grits... my favorite breakfast! (Fiance has this with a gallon of white gravy on top for his ideal b'fast).

I've never heard of grits w/coleslaw and fried fish? I don't eat fish though, so maybe that's why..

Marjon, just trying to pull on the hunger strings of the newly banded? (sip sip sip my v-8!!)

V-8 on ice, v-8 watered down.. v-8 with a stick of celery you can't eat, v-8 with coffee, v-8 with lettuce you can't eat.....

I saw those crabcakes at Ruby Tuesdays the last time we went (right before my pre-op diet). They looked good, but I'm pickyabout my seafood so I didn't want to risk it. I'll have to try them when I'm at that point since you spoke for them! I LOVE their salad bar. I generally gorge on their salad bar, get a burger (the best burgers ever.. sigh..and I don't typically eat hamburgers), and take it home for midnight snack. Back in THOSE days. I'm just looking forward to mushies at this point. And craving crab.

Hi, I had just a little salad at Ruby's on Sat.and it came back on me. Salad doesn't usually do that to me and it was not pleasant. I waited a while and then had my crabcake. It was SOOOO good! Expensive but good.

We were there with 10 other family members. Nobody knows about my surgery except my hubby and they were all like,"Is that all you're going to eat?!" I'm like, "yeah, just not very hungry tonight." :) :) :o

I love grits, had them yesterday. I am southern, (TN) and love them with butter and sugar , of course I love butter and sugar on anything ,one of the reasons I am here,lol. I would eat it on chicken, but I can't eat chicken!

I've heard grits referred to as maize porridge, so maybe it's porridge in Australia. Do they even have porridge in Australia? Isn't porridge in Britain what Americans call oatmeal?

Personally, I eat polenta (the Italian cousin to grits) all the time and never had a problem with it. I also eat a lot of beef and venison. They go down fine as long as they are not overcooked or dry. A rare filet mignon slides right down and is very, very satisfying. Shrimp, crab, and lobster all work well, too.

Just so you know, my official first 'mushy' food is going to be crab. Ever since I started this thread I've been craving crabcakes.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
