Is it safe to dye my hair? (6 months post opt)

Recommended Posts

Tomorrow it'll officially be 6 months since I was sleeved. I was told that my hair would start falling out a few months into post-opt, but so far (*knock on wood*)so good. I've been working hard to get in my protein/calcium, I exercise, try to eat well, drink milk daily and I (almost always) take my Vitamins, so maybe that's helping.

My hair seems to be growing faster since my surgery. (It was chin length pre-opt. Post opt, it meets my bra strap).

Anyway, I've been wanting to dye my hair for quite some time now, but I am terrified that it's too soon and/or I'm going to somehow mess up the increased Hair growth I've seen and it'll start breaking off/falling out.

Have any of you dyed your hair post opt? How did it go? How long did you wait?

My husband suggested if I just got high lights, so that if my hair does fall out, it'll only be parts of it. But I'm still leery and not a big fan of highlights (I've had them done in the past and the stylists apparently didn't know what they were doing because they looked so unnatural!)

I think dying hair is damaging to the cuticles and ends so if you're really worried then wait a little longer. That said, I have dyed my hair several months post op and I don't think it made my Hair loss any worse than if I hadn't dyed my hair. Good luck.

Thanks Lil. Maybe I'll hold out until school starts back. Ya know, new year, new hair do (plus that'll put me closer to the 1 year mark)

I dyed my hair 3 months out at home. I use a semi permanent color that washes out in 28 shampoos. No Hair loss, even from the weight loss. The semi perm color I use makes my hair feel luxurious and doesn't dry it out at all.

I have my hair dyed at the beauty shop once a month, and have for years. (See the white streak? That's the only part that's my natural color.)

It hasn't affected my Hair loss at all. I started losing hair faster at 3.5 months post op, and now at 7 months out the rate of loss has now slowed a bit.

I didn't have any hair loss, I'm six months out. I died it red a month ago, hated it and just went back to blonde yesterday. Seemed to do just fine with the red, no apparent loss. I just didn't like the color!

I've dyed my hair 2x now and I'm just shy of 4 months. Unfortunately I do have Hair loss and it's horrible but it will grow back, I'm not bald or anything but my long thick dark hair is now a lil on the thin side lol. I think you should do whatever makes you happy :-)

You should be fine! I'm 5 1/2 months out and a hairstylist and I've been coloring my hair. I haven't had a problem.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
