OK...my surgery is scheduled for July 23rd, and that's all I've been thinking about....UNTIL I got a job last week...not just any job a part time job in the travel industry. I mean these jobs don't come around often and there was no way I was turning it down. My problem is of course I couldn't tell them about the surgery because there are 100 others waiting in line for this job. It requires that I go out of town for 2 weeks of training, which I am trying to cram in pre op. My question is post op. Is lifting objects a concern? At times I will be required to lift objects up to 40 pound for very short distances. It's actually just to pick them up and put them on the conveyor belt? How long before I am able to do it? I don't want to lose my dream job, but then again I don't want to mess up my surgery. I may have to delay the surgery....something I DON'T want to do. HELP!!!!

You should ask your surgeon for specific guidelines on lifting. I would not have been cleared to lift like that for at least four weeks after surgery. Good luck!

Yes, lifting objects is a huge concern. Until you're four weeks out, you can't lift more than 10 lbs. because your surgeon will cut straight through the muscle in your lower right abdomen (where he or she will pull out your lapband and 85% of your stomach) and it will be painful and fragile in that area. Last thing you want to do is tear it open. I couldn't carry my kids for four weeks and it was SO HARD. My husband left on a business trip during my last week of recovery, and my surgeon okay'd me for lifing the toddler for diaper changes and getting in her in her car seat, but that was about it.

I had a six week timeframe on lifting more than I think it was 8#. I believe the concern is adhesions. A friend had abdominal surgery and ignored weight restrictions. Later she needed another abdominal surgery and the adhesions were an issue. She made a believer out of me.

I can't pick up anything over 10 lbs for the next month.

I couldn't pick up over 10 pounds for 6 weeks, after 6 weeks I picked up about 12 pounds at the grocery store and OMG I started having pain in my left incision where they removed my band....I hurt for a couple of hours so I am just taking it easy.

I'm experiencing this right now. I'm three weeks out from surgery and yesterday went to the grocery store and lifted a case of Water into the cart. I'm paying for it now!

I personally know the feeling of getting that dream American Airlines job!!!

BUT! Your health is more important than a job in the airline business!!

Personally I don't lie, but in this case I would advise them you are having

some kind of emergency surgery & won't be able to lift more than 10lbs!

Don't do it until you absolutely have to.....

Once they hire you & you are working they can't do anything about it. Your

health issues are protected by law & you don't have to tell them anything

you don't want to!!! Good luck & enjoy your new job!!!!
