Zoco 13 Posted June 22, 2014 Did anyone eat sugar free pudding or applesauce in the first week after surgery? I have a big pill to crush and eat with something, and wanted to know if pudding was safe. I've read where it has to be Clear liquids, then I read where it says anything you can get through a straw you can have.

I've read where it has to be Clear Liquids, then I read where it says anything you can get through a straw you can have. All Drs are different. Mine kept it simple... anything that would go thru a straw but DO NOT use the straw. Can you not get your pills in liquid ??? Sometimes that's a possibility. Good luck
Colleen C 169 Posted June 22, 2014 I am 2 days post op and have to crush my pills. I have several pills and only allowed liquids. For me the best thing I have figured out is I crush them all and add some Water. I drink it down and then sip on a a 4oz apple or grape juice diluted with 4oz Water. By the time I sip it down, the left over bitter pill taste is gone. It isnt as bad as it sounds, plus I dont have an other choice, lol
Zoco 13 Posted June 22, 2014 Oh dear Lord that was nasty!! I crushed the pill and about died from the bitterness. The surgery made me break out in a shingles episode. My stomach is cramping from the cold apple juice. .... I'm just a mess today
Colleen C 169 Posted June 22, 2014 Oh my goodness! Have the juice room temperature and no gulping. You poor thing. I know it is hard but we have to so do your best. Try different combo's, could you put meds in grape juice instead? I always like to get the meds down quick as possible. I am hear with you! Better luck next time. ; )
terrydumont46 1,954 Posted June 23, 2014 I take about 20 pills alone in the morning. I remember sitting with a medicine cup full of pills taking 1 at a time. took me over an hour to take my med's. I finally started to just take a few at a time with Water. the only one I didn't try was the capsule of Prilosec. but breaking the capsule apart and swallowing with water worked. now that I am a year down the road I can take all my pills with one swallow. if you are taking liquids okay put the crushed pills in pudding or applesauce or Jello. but this is a question you put up to your doctor. even your prescribing doctor can get involved by ordering liquid or chewable forms of your medications or ordering a smaller different pill. I did that too. there is a way to do this.
angelface811 100 Posted June 23, 2014 I have to take 19 pills a day which includes my Vitamins which are chewables. Eventually we should be able to swallow all of our pills. But before my surgery I showed all of my pills to my surgeon and he told me which ones I could attempt to swallow and which ones to crush. I have some awful ones to crush. Yuck! So far I like mixing them with strawberry watermelon sugar free drink mix from Walmart. Sometimes key lime Greek yogurt. Sometimes I get full just taking my pills. Tried moving up to my "next size" pill and it just traveled right back up my esophagus. But 2 weeks later I can get it down. Just a bit at a time. Here is to being able to swallow all our pills and the laughing at the sour expressions we make. 1 Zoco reacted to this

I wanted to curl up in a ball and go away. It was awful. I can't imagine having it when recovering from major surgery. You poor thing!

parisshel 1,892 Posted June 25, 2014 I was allowed applesauce after surgery. I could only get down a spoonful or so the first week post-op, but it was on the "OK" list for me.
