Pain when eating 5 mths post op

Recommended Posts

I have noticed for the last couple of days that when i eat i get a pain. The pain is generally between my breastbone, kind of at the top of my stomach ( i think!) 3 nights ago i had the worst indigestion that i had to get out of bed dont know if this has anything to do with it. I sometimes still eat fast, about 30 secs between each bite. Anybody had this kind of pain this many months out???

That does sound like the kind of pain that comes from eating too fast and too much. If that were happening to me, I would slow down my eating by using the Eat Slower app on my phone and try 45 seconds between bites. I would also lessen the amount of food at each meal. If that didn't solve the problem, I would get in touch with my surgeon for guidance. Good luck!

Did you eat something spicy/hot? That could cause it too.

Are you on anything for acid reflux? You could check with your MD and try taking an over the counter med like Prilosec.

Like Bufflehead said, eat less and slower. My surgeon says to eat up to a 1/2 cup and I notice if I eat more then that my reflux can act up.

Between the two, you should be able to get some relief. I know how much it stinks and I hope you get relief soon!

BTW, Bufflehead,

I would slow down my eating by using the Eat Slower app on my phone

Thanks for naming this app. I am loading on my phone right now!

Have you had your gallbladder checked? I had mine out years ago & it sounds like the right spot for it.

If I overeat I get extremely uncomfortable & it takes a couple of hours to go away. Fortunately it hasn't been painful. I started MEASURING everything I eat & that has pretty much eliminated the "over full" feeling. I'm 6 weeks post op tomorrow & I'm still learning stuff. Hope you feel better & figure out what the issue is with your pain. We all have lots of bad habits to get rid of when it comes to eating. Slowing down my eating & also drinking 64 oz of Fluid have been my hardest issues to deal with.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
