Hello

I had surgery five days ago and have a question.... Is anyone taking antibiotics? I was surprised I was not prescribed any considering the incisions.

What about pain? I can tell you that the pain does not compare to when I had a C-section but I have very few painkillers - just in case. What pain medications are others taking? Getting 60-70 g of Protein a day on a clear liquid diet is tough!

Thanks so much

Congrats on your surgery! I hope all went well!

I didn't have any antibiotics, unless they happen to put some in my IV when I was in the hospital but I don't think they did. I was given a liquid pain med but only used it 2 or 3 times after coming home. I did like the anti nausea med I was given. Lol. And at my 2 week follow up he gave me an antacid. But I haven't needed it. And yes, getting liquids and Protein in can be a chore! lol.

I didn't come home with any antibiotics but my biggest incision opened up so my doctor put me on one for 10 days. In my case, I do not fight infection very well since I don't have a spleen. Usually my infections are lung related. My incision is still oozing a bit but isn't all red around the edges. I'm 5 weeks post op (6 weeks this Monday) & will see my doctor this coming Wednesday. At that time I will find out how long it takes for this incision to close up. All the other incisions are healed. I had to have a hiatal hernia fixed & they had to cut thru a bunch of scar tissue from my spleen surgery 50 yrs ago. This might be why my incision is about 1 1/2 inches long & taking a while to heal.

I have had almost no pain & never vomited so I feel very fortunate. I'm so glad I had this done. Looking forward to being cleared for solid food this week. I'm not sure what my doctor's thoughts are for solid food at 6 weeks post op. I've tolerated everything I have eaten so far & I have had little pieces of tuna & chicken a couple of times. I just chewed it up really well & it went down just fine.

Water is still an issue. I'm working on it tho'. Protein I get in daily between 50 & 60 so I need to work harder on that too. Being able to eat chicken & fish will help this a great deal & hopefully will help my incision heal more quickly. Hopefully no more antibiotics. They have a tendency to upset my stomach.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
