Finally going for a consult....omg...nerves in full force.

Wow...even that one small step made this very real. I'm so nervous/scared. Any words of encouragement?

I had my first consult last week and my hands were shaking I was so nervous! The nurse was like "what are you afraid of? We're not going to poke you with a needle or anything!"

I'm not worried about needles or even that crazy alligator-stapler thing they use to make the sleeve! It's hard to explain that I've developed such a phobia of going to the doctor's and getting scolded for my weight that it's hard to do anything medical at all. And going to the consult was both scary and a relief--that maybe this thing will really happen and I won't have to be morbidly obese anymore.

Congrats on taking the first step. I wish I had done it years before I did.

That said, the consult is pretty much a non-event. Mine was pretty much a review of my basic medical history, discussing which surgery would be appropriate for me, a talk about realistic goals and expectations, an opportunity for answers to any questions I had and a meeting with a coordinator to go over the requirements I had to meet. It was a year before I actually got sleeved.

Don't be scared or nervous. You're doing something really good for you. Remember that.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
