Pre-op Diet - feeling horrible

Recommended Posts

Okay. It's Day 4 of pre op diet for gastric sleeve. My instructions are 5 - eight ounce Protein Shakes and bullion and sugar free Jello. I'm feeling horrible. I have headaches / Migraines, sick feeling in stomach, anytime I drink shakes or broth it goes right through me. I'm tired. I'm grumpy. And I'm having to work up until surgery day. Other than drinking Water and other fluids (non calorie), anyone have any tips. I try to sleep as much as possible. My pre op diet is 8 days so I tell my self I'm almost half way and then I can tell myself tomorrow that I'm closer to finish line than starting line. I just would like to lessen my symptoms.

The pre-op diet is difficult, for sure. Get out there and get moving. Walk, swim, jog (shuffle) ... do something. This will help get your mind off of food and help you focus. Plus, adding a little endurance to your overall fitness will aid in your recovery.

Also, try some meditation. If you have never tried it, do a little research on it.

Ok, this might sound super silly but brush your teeth a lot. I find it helps, I am on no carbs right now and when I feel like I am starving I brush my teeth. I then do not want to eat. I know that is of no help. =) Wish I had more advice. I did read on here a few days age where someone had to have 28 days of Protein Shakes pre-op. At least you can say thank God I don't have to do that. Best of luck to you. Hang in there!

The pre-op diet was the hardest for me, I was always hungry, tired and grouchy.....but you just have to keep on keeping on and before you know it your surgery day will be here and you won't have to worry about it. Always remember why you are doing this, and the results you'll have in the long run.

My pre op diet was the same as yours...except it was 16 days long. My liver was pretty crazy in size with lots of little arms coming out of it...so I had to do my pre op diet a lot longer.

I took a ton of hot baths during dinner time at the beginning....if I was stuck in the tub I wouldn't think about the food as much. Once I hit day 4 or 5, I was better fkr sure. The first 3 or 4 days your body is detoxing from all the sugar, flour and processed foods. Day 4 or 5 you'll most likely turn a corner.

Water up as much as you can and do what pdxman said...get out and move. It'll naturally make your body feel better.

We've almost all felt the same way...many have walked before you..and were all pulling for you!

Thx everyone for the reassuring thoughts. I'm going to try walking in AM before it gets too hot. I try the positive thoughts. I know I'll do it. I just wish the headaches, fatigue and [excuse the bluntness] diarrhea would stop. I'm taking Tylenol & Imodium. Neither seem to help.

I agree with the other posts, the preop diet was very difficult. My husband warned my kids I was doing something difficult and I would be irritable and emotional. I did it for 14 days, cheated once on day 4. I felt so weak. I was allowed G2, low calorie Gatorade- it really helped. I ate broth for supper and SF Jello for snacks... Oh- and I walked- esp when my family ate supper. Hang in there. I am now on day 12 liquid diet postop. This is much easier cause I'm not hungry. Good luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
