2 week post op! 30 min drinking rule s**ks!

Recommended Posts

Hi June sleevers! My surgery was June 3rd and my 2 week post op visit was yesterday. All good. I've lost 20lbs and have been upgraded from pureed to soft food! AND I don't have to crush pills anymore (thank goodness).

My visit went well then I got home and had flu like symptoms for hours. Couldn't keep anything in. Don't know what that was about. Now today I'm having a hard time again. Went for a great walk this morning before all the crazy storms hit Chicago. Then I REALLY wanted a good drink of Water. As we all have learned, that's not quite possible anymore. So I sipped and sipped and felt overheated and icky. All day I've had problems getting Protein in. At last count after dinner I only have 42grams. I cannot even think of a shake right now. I made tilapia for dinner with some greek yogurt and it was fabulous. But now I have to wait the required 30 minutes to drink and all I want is Water. I know this is quite a journey. But I actually find the hardest part to be this liquid thing. 64oz a day. Sipping only. NOT drinking before or after a meal for 30 minutes. This is HARD.

Anyone else going nuts over this?!

Yep! I have yet to get all my Water in AND the idea of gulping a full glass of Water down when I'm thirsty is almost as frustrating as wanting to chew some food and not being able to!

Gotta get used to this "new normal" :-)

Good luck!

Thanks! Good luck to you too. My dietician said she's really worried that I'm getting dehydrated easy. And I was like "DUH". Just keep swimming I guess... ;)

You have it easy, my doc insists on an hour after eating. It actually helps me space my meals.

Oh it's torture!!! And even when eating too. Sometimes I feel like it I need it to help swallow. But it's a new normal and retraining. We are all learning and finding what works. Baby steps. I need to get more liquids in. Still can't do Water yet. Thank goodness for shakes, Vitamin water, and crystal light. Well get there girls! I see my nut and doc on Monday, If any ideas, I'll share.

My surgeon requires to stop drinking 10 minutes before a meal. I don't have to wait 30 minutes to drink after a meal, no, I have to wait an entire hour! That sucks.

I absolutely hate it, too! My doctor said 1 hour. Sometimes I have to go rinse my mouth out after a meal. I'm on mushies and tuna is the easiest for me to tolerate, but I can't stand to taste it for an hour after I eat. I really miss drinking with my meals. I find myself going for a Protein Shake, just so I don't have to "eat" without drinking. They say you get used to it, I sure hope so!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
