Port soreness. How long did yours last?

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I thought I was out of the port soreness phase, but, after a fill wednesday, then I grabbed a load of laundry in the bathroom monday night, I could barely workout yesterday because my port was SO sore.

The few days after surgery, this was my biggest complaint. I was verrrry sore on my port side and getting in and out of bed and off the couch was a struggle day 1-3. The soreness went away completely at about 4 weeks out, but bumping it every once in awhile would shoot a twinge to the area.

I got so nervous while working out last night, I stopped lifting (which I was cleared to do at 3 weeks) and just did cardio. Afterwards, I started to panic, thinking i ripped my port from my stomach wall, but felt my port and it didnt feel like it had shifted. I iced it, took some ibuprofen PM for the inflamation (ok'ed by my NP earlier on) and went to sleep. I woke up feeling 10x better today, but its still a little sore to bend over and stuff like that.

So, I guess my question for banders further out, do you ever hit your port area the wrong way and it gets really sore? Do you ever worry about ripping your port from your stomach? I would have assumed at almost 6 weeks post-op, I would have been completely healed and have no pain.

Yes, yes yes. The port seems always to be a "sore" spot for me. Not that it hurts all the time but more that I hit it and rub it the wrong way often.

When I get a fill sometimes it's a bit swollen where the needle goes in and but mostly it's from my everyday things. For me it's hitting and leaning into my desk at work which sits right at the port site. Sometimes it's from something I pick up and carry too close to my tummy like the laundry basket.

Don't worry I doubt you did any damage to it, it can just be a sensitive area for us.

I don't do crunches or anything, but I hardly ever notice my port now at almost 14 weeks post op. If I push on it I can irritate it intentionally, but nothing I do day to day seems to bother it, including sleeping on my stomach.

I am a lapbander who is 22 months out. I have soreness from time to time. I protect my port area-I don't let my husband "squeeze" me in my stomach area-lol-I scream keep away of my lapband!-bah. But I have trouble doing crunches or situps so I do very little of that exercise.

I woke up this morning and I am experiencing a really sore port area (I think). It feels like a sting, a sharp hurting pain like a stabbing in and around where my port is. I do not have any protrusion from it and I don't remember hitting it, I don't think you can even see it, I can feel it though. I'm wondering if any banders have every experienced this kind of pain and what it could be from and should I be concerned? I have had "stings" or that's what I have called them from time to time for the last 3 months. I was banded 13 months ago and have lost my weight of 60+ lbs and now just wondering if this is because I'm at where I need to be or what? I'm in the green zone and don't over eat, exercise and feel wonderful just this hurting in my upper left side of my belly button below my rib cage. Help????

I'm 2-1/2 years out, and still get soreness around my port from time to time. I do a lot of crunches, regardless, as my doc said not to be concerned about hurting the port. Sometimes it aches if my pants are tighter or more high-waisted and rubbing in that area. Concern would definitely be warranted if the area turns red, very swollen, or is hot to the touch -- as that could signal some type of infection.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
