Wouldn't we feel full longer if we DIDN'T chew quite so thoroughly?

Recommended Posts

I had my sleeve 7 months ago, and have had no complications (knock wood). I eat just protien and fat, and keep my carbs as low as humanly possible. Since I don't like the low-carb veggies, I eat 2-3 meals each day of beef/chicken/fish, with some aged cheddar for flavor. My other 1-2 meals each day consist of 1 Quest bar. My question is about keeping hunger at bay.

Wouldn't we feel full longer if we DIDN'T chew quite so thoroughly? I'm thinking of meat in particular. And I don't mean swallowing huge chunks unchewed - I just mean chewing a bit less than "to the consistency of applesauce." Wouldn't that keep the sleeve busy longer, and therefore keep the hunger at bay longer?

Would there be drawbacks to doing this?

I do know when I eat certain meats I stay fuller longer. I haven't been chewing my food to applesauce consistency for a while now. I've just kinda felt my way through. Never had anything bother my stomach but I do joke that I have a sleeve of steel,

At about 3 months I started chewing less and taking bigger bites and it does help you feel full longer. When I eat that way with a dense Protein like chicken I usually have to wait almost an hour before I feel like I'm not full anymore.

I ate chicken way too fast today and didn't chew as well as I should have and I threw up for the first time since my surgery 1 month ago. Maybe it gets better over time but I learned my lesson for now.

The opening of a tight sleeve is much smaller than the esophagus, so pieces too big may not get through

I had similar thoughts about tough meat vs tender meat. I cook a lot of pork loin and if not cooked long enough, it is very chewy and tough. I've tried it both ways - eating it tender and eating it still tough. I have not noticed a difference in how long I stay full.

I only followed the applesauce rule for the first 6 months or so. now I am 15 months out and chew to a normal consistency. I still try to eat slow though or I will get very uncomfortable. I agree that having bigger chunks will keep the stomach busy longer. liquified stuff just slides through now.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
