Inability to throw up?

Recommended Posts

I've heard over and over that because of the restriction, you're forced into good habits. You can't overeat. You have to eat slowly. Chew chew chew or spew spew spew. I'm 6 months out, and I'm genuinely a very good patient and follow the rules well. I measure out and log everything I eat, I weigh myself every morning, workout at the gym 5 days a week, and take my Vitamins religiously. I can count on one hand the times I really overate, ate too quickly, and/or didn't chew well enough. I remember each occasion vividly, because they hurt that badly. 10+ minutes of wave after wave of wracking pain that made me literally cry out. 6 months out, and I haven't thrown up once. Not one single time. In the throws of that pain, I sure as heck wanted to.

But I can't?? I had a hiatal hernia repair at the same time as my sleeve. Could that have really made it permanently impossible for me to throw up when I make these mistakes? I've looked it up, and it's a common side affect from the surgery. Can't find stats on how long it lasts though...

If I can't throw up, what does that mean? If I overeat, am I stretching out my stomach, where otherwise my restriction would reject the food?

I've never heard of this happening before and I've been around for awhile. Though I can say it being impossible to vomit sounds great. Just be extra careful when you eat and never over eat, I'm sure you will be fine.

I got a tummy bug when I was 2 months out, and had the dry heaves for part of a morning. Well, a little stomach Fluid was produced, but no food. Other than that I haven't thrown up at all. I get the hiccups when I get overly full.

I also had a hiatal hernia repair.

repair would only stretch your esophagus and shouldn't have any impact on your physical ability to regurgitate. you are lucky!

Considering how much I ended up throwing up toward the end of having my lap band, this sounds great! I don't want to throw up, I HATE throwing up. If I were to mess up, lesson learned for next time. Let that pain that you're going through for 10+ minutes be a reminder for next time.

I had gall bladder removed and hiatal hernia repair. Usually my nose will run and I know to stop! Still throw up if I eat too fast!

I'm glad to hear chronic cases are uncommon! http://www.livestrong.com/article/197261-complications-of-hiatal-hernia-surgery/ It's only been 6 months, so hopefully it I'll be able to throw up down the line. At least I can burp, and it brings a little relief!! I read ER stories of people who couldn't burp or throw up.

It's still training me, even if I'm not throwing up. That level of pain has only happened 5 times, and two of those times were from enthusiastically eating spinach and artichoke dip. Never. Ever. Touching. Again.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
