6 weeks post op-What size meals are people eating?

Recommended Posts

I'm 6 weeks post op and feel hungry sometimes as soon as an hour or two after eating, even though i'm eating Protein with each meal/snack. It makes me wonder if i should be eating more at each meal so i wondered how much volume people are eating at one time approx. 6 weeks post op.

I'm 5 weeks post op & I haven't been on a particular schedule for eating. Probably not a good thing. I still can only consume about 3 ozs of food comfortably. I have found that any more than that will make me feel ill & it takes a couple of hours for that over full feeling to go away. It's not worth over eating no matter how hungry you feel. My tummy lets me know when I have had enough. It isn't the normal full feeling you had before surgery. In my case it's a slight ache in the top of my stomach. It's better to let your sink finish the rest of your meal. Let your tummy dictate the size of your meals.

Great question. I was wondering about that myself

I"m six weeks out now, and on regular foods, but the NUT told me to avoid anything like a slider food (mushy soft stuff) which I do for the most part. I do four small meals a day of 2-3 ounces lean Protein plus three tiny servings of fruit or veggies but ONLY if I've eaten my Protein first. I get a serving of milk in each day too - either in SF pudding or a small skinny latte or milk with a half a Protein shake if I'm not hitting close to 70 grams of protein yet that day. If calls and protein are still low, I add a half a Quest bar (yum!).

She also said to aim for about 800 calories at this point, and then the other day she said i might need to up that a bit more just to keep losing weight. That may be true, but I've not yet convinced myself of it! Most days i'm at 800 still.

I was sleeved on April 29 and since surgery day have lost 29 pounds. (though I sure wish it were faster!)

I'm nearly 4 weeks out, I'm still on soft foods, and small amounts, about 3 oz at a time, I still continue with sugar free popsicles to keep my Water intake in, which has been a huge struggle, I went from 2-3 quarts a day before surgery now i'm lucky to get a full pint in...ughh.!! My upper stomach is very painful if I eat to much, so I stay small meals as I need them, I let my tummy tell me when to eat, most of the Protein foods I should be eating nearly make me vomite..so I stick with fresh fruit several times a day and a good bean Soup 2 to 3 times a day with really well cooked vegi's...so far it's been working, I'm down 30 lbs in 28 days..

I am 6 weeks out, and I am wondering the same thing. Some meals I can eat almost 1/2 cup of food, others just a couple of tablespoons. I couldn't imagine eating 3oz of straight Protein. 1oz chicken or fish by itself, and I throw up. I have to have it in something, like I've done really well with chicken in curry sauce. But still, only probably an ounce of chicken in 1/4 cup of sauce. I'm still relying heavily on Protein supplements to get me up to 60 grams per day. Fortunately, fluids haven't been a problem at all, getting at least 50oz in per day, not including my Protein shakes.

I'm 9 weeks out today and my meal sizes are still pretty small. I have zero hunger, like I mean I am never hungry and pretty much force myself to eat. The only way I know my body is hungry is that I find myself yawning or I just start not feeling great. I have gotten really good at reading the signs my body is showing me, because I do not get any brain signal of hunger anymore.

I would prefer to just have 3 meals per day but in order to get my Protein quantities in I have to eat more like 4-5 times/day.

I drink a 1-1/2 scoop Protein shake for Breakfast (with a bunch of things added i.e. green powder etc), mid morning I have a small snack (i.e. 1/2 cup of greek yogurt), lunch would be maybe 1/2 cup chili, dinner maybe 2-3oz of meat and maybe 1-2 pieces of veggie (i.e. steamed broccoli). If I can I will try and eat a small piece of turkey pepperoni or turkey Jerky in the afternoons.

That's it, I'm lucky if I hit 800 calories in a day, it's typically more like 600-700. I rarely have room for veggies or fruit which I miss ALOT but protein is obviously the priority. I add an organic greens powder to my morning shake to try and compensate for the deficiency.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
