Insulin resistance and meal plans

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!

I am scheduled to have my lap band surgery in July. I believe I am insulin resistant because of the dark pigments under my arms and behind me neck (Acanthosis nigricans). I'm hoping the lap band diet will be beneficial in getting rid of this or at least lessening it. Has anyone else experienced this? And are there any tips you can offer in regards to meal plans?

I was insulin resistant before surgery. I was taking 200 units of lantus daily and over 30 units of Humalog and my blood sugar was still 250 plus and at times was 500 for just eating a potato. when I got my lapband I really had to take my blood around 4 times a day. I was eating no carbs except what was in vegetables. my blood sugar dropped to 100 and I started to have real low blood sugars. Gosh I hated it when it happened. within 2 months I was taking only 30 units of insulin at night and no Humalog. I stopped all insulin 4 months ago I think. I am still on Glucophage but only 1 in morning and 1 at night. my liver is still releasing sugars into my blood. but there is talk of discontinuing that too. I believe the discolorations you are talking about will fade in time if not go away completely. I wish you luck. lapband surgery saved my life it will yours too.

hi, yes the dark Patches you refference is part of insulin resistance, have you been tested for PCOS? (polycystic ovarian syndrome/disease)? that is a classic marker of the disorder. following a low carb diet and adding metformin does help IF you have insulin resistance. Your doctor can test your A1C, thru a fasting suggar test. Does anyone in your family have Diabetis? or had gestational diabetis durring pregnancy?

They say lapbanding works for PCOS I took of 74lbs w/ metformin, low carb and lap band. talk to your doctor. best of luck.

I too was taking daily injections of lantus, and oral meds also....as I lost weight, my Diabetic meds, as well as the rest of the meds I was taking decreased....

I have been off all Diabetic medications for years now...

I still get routine lab work done every 4 months, and everything has been spot on...completely normal.

I was a real mess, with one foot in the grave...my PCP kept telling me if I could loose weight, it would all go away....of course I could not loose the weight by any of the standard diets, tried and failed....it was then he brought up Bariatric Surgery and suggested I go for a consult....

I have been 100% successful for a few years, my weight as well as my health!!!!

Never had an issue with my band, other than getting it adjusted......

Best decision I could have ever made... Changed...and saved...my life.

May I ask what testing has been done to determine if you are in fact insulin resistant?

I think I might be as well

Thanks

Thanks for all the responses. And I have not been tested for insulin resistance but dark armpits and a dark neck are tell tale signs of it. I was tested for diabetes a few years ago but my weight has been up and down since then. Since my pre op diet and surgery I have lost 17 lbs and stuck to a low carb diet and the coloring is improving.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
