Getting Back on Track after having a baby...

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, I'm new to posting but have lurked here for about 2 years. I usually just came by if I had a question or needed a little lift once in awhile. I had my surgery in August of 2012. From August to June 2013, I lost 78 pounds. I was thrilled. I was wearing sizes that I don't remember ever wearing and I felt wonderful. In July 2013, I found out I was pregnant with my third child unexpectedly.

I started gaining right away in my pregnancy. I had gained 5 pounds before I even went to the doctor. I was scared to gain weight, after losing all of that. My appetite increased tremendously, I felt I had more capacity, I ate more often....I couldn't control it. I gained 46 pounds of what I had lost back. Makes me tear up just thinking about it. :(

On March 12th, I had a c-section and had a healthy 7 pound, 13 ounce baby boy. When I left the hospital, I had lost 15 pounds. Since then, I had lost 4 more, but have gained them back plus some. I know that I'm probably eating more than I should be, but I feel like I'm famished all the time. I'm breastfeeding my son. When I do cut back on calories and intake, my milk supply diminishes. I've been walking at least a mile and a half every night, and have even started the Couch to 5K on my treadmill, which totally kicks my butt, BTW....

I guess my questions are these:

Do hormones play a big role in weight loss? Is my breastfeeding hindering losing pounds?

Do you have any suggestions to help me get on track? I feel like my brain is still in pregnancy mode and that I'm still growing a baby...

Would doing a week on the liquid diet help at all?

Is there a possibilty that I've stretched my pouch? Did I screw up royally by getting pregnant and ruin my chances of being skinnier again?

Thank you, guys...I appreciate your help.

**I would say that hormones do play a big role in weight loss. I don't know that much about breastfeeding, you may want to ask someone who has had that experience.

**start tracking your food. Find out how much you should be eating during breastfeeding.

**only if its healthy and doesn't affect breast feeding

**Having a baby is not a mistake, its a blessing. You can get on track again. After pregnancy it could take a long time for your body to readjust again. I would talk to your doctor and don't panic. :D

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
