PRINCESSM 210 Posted June 15, 2014 Grrr. Was told this week due to barretts esophagus I cant have the sleeve and am leery of the bypass due to its reputation of being dangerous. Researched it and now my chief worries are hospital readmission because im self paying and the possibilities of dumping or incontinence. Sounds unpleasant. However getting out of my car today I heard the plastic on the side of the seat snap. How embarassing and thankful no one was there to hear it. That put me over the edge. Will talk to surgeon about bypass this week. How common is dumping and (God forbid) fecal incontinence?
LilBoo007 491 Posted June 15, 2014 I had gastric bypass in March of last year... So a year and almost 4 months... I have only had dumping when I eat or drink too fast or really fattening foods. I stay away from ALL sugar and high fat foods and I'm fine!! You learn very quickly what your new pouch likes and doesn't like! There isn't much I can't eat!! As far as bathroom issues.,, I don't have any as I don't know many people who have had gastric bypass that do either... I have bad gas at times and it smells horrible but that's about it! I would make the same choice again in a heartbeat!! I have had one problem (an ulcer) and it was quickly resolved with antibiotics and carafate and it was gone in 2 months! No other issues in almost a year and a half!!! 1 VSGAnn2014 reacted to this
PRINCESSM 210 Posted June 15, 2014 @@LilBoo007 Thanks I'm pretty nervous about this whereas I was so sure about the sleeve.
Chelly 364 Posted June 15, 2014 I was originally going to have the sleeve but two weeks before surgery that all changed when my gastric doctor said that I should change to bypass because of GERDS. I had bypass and I'm not sorry. I think I had dumping once because I over ate. It's horrible and I won't do that again. As for bowel problems that's really not a problem any more. Had loose bowels after surgery which is uncommon. When I got on solids that went away. It's okay to be unsure but it will really be okay as long as you following all instructions from the surgeon and nutritionist. Good luck. 1 PRINCESSM reacted to this

KittyKat848 93 Posted June 24, 2014 I am six months out and I have never dumped. I am so glad that I had gastric bypass.
terry1118 1,274 Posted June 24, 2014 I had my very first (and only, so far) dumping experience at one year out. You can avoid dumping by rigidly adhering to your team's dietary instructions and carefully reading labels. My experience was from not reading the label on baked Beans which contained 13 gr of sugar - way more than I've been used to. Bowels are good, too.
ForeverFat? 9 Posted July 1, 2014 I am awaiting approval for Rny from BCBS Of IL. Today I called a colleague in another state on a phone call. He asked if I had been running, because I was breathing so hard...I was sitting stationary at my desk. I WAS SO EMBARRASSED. CMON BCBS!!!
green*eyed*girl 170 Posted July 2, 2014 I am almost 3 months out and I had no dumping whatsoever and I can tolerate every food, even sugar unfortunately. I almost wish I had dumping coz now I have to rely on myself not to eat unhealthy. But thank god I do not crave sweets, and this is a big change compared to my before surgery cravings, I used to eat chocolate daily, and now I haven't had any since surgery. Bowels are fine, I get gassy pretty much from the same foods I did before the surgery. (beans, milk ect) so I try to avoid these.
joleneB 26 Posted July 3, 2014 I always thought of dumping as a good thing, and it's one of the reasons I chose gastric bypass over the others . My self control with sweets and high fat foods were out of control & I needed something to keep me on the right track, and it does!! I have dumped twice, once right after surgery from drinking my Protein Shake too fast, and the other on mashed potatoes which surprised me. I don't get horrible stomach pains just severe nausea, dizziness, heart palpitations and sleepiness, that's enough to keep me on track! But I'm glad it happens! 1 terry1118 reacted to this

Tgarden 76 Posted July 6, 2014 I'm 3 months post op, and I'm super careful about not eating things with too much sugar. So, I have had no hint of dumping syndrome. If you aren't positive that you can completely cut out sugary things, then your concerns about bypass are certainly valid. It can be a huge issue for some people, and honestly I still struggle with cravings. Luckily there are sugar free options for when it gets bad. As for incontinence, not even a hint of that either. My urinary incontinence is tons better already. As for the other kind, your bowels will go through some upheaval for the first few months just getting used to your new body. I've never once felt like I was going to "leak" though. It seems that people who do have problems have those problems go away as soon as you resume a mostly normal eating pattern. Good luck with whatever you decide! You will do great!
