? For those who are allowed Raw Veggies on pre-op diet

i am allowed 'unlimited raw vegetables' on my pre-op diet.

I asked my bariatric coordinator, but please let me ask here also. DOES GUACAMOLE COUNT? it's technically all raw, just mashed up together. however, i know that botanically avacado is considered a fruit, just like tomatoes. however, we eat both things as veg here in the US.

my coordinator says 'as long as its all raw, i'm ok'. thoughts???

also- dill pickles????

I think the pickle would be ok but the avocado I would pass on. Look up the fat/calories on the avocado, I know it is good for you but it is neither low calorie or low carb. Of course the best decision is by those doing the surgery.

Good luck, this pre-op diet sucks. I am not suppose to have anything besides chike Meal Replacement, broth and sugar free Jello. It has been really hard.

I am on day 9 of pre-op and down 16lbs.

I am allowed as many vegetables as I want but avocado and Tomato were clearly labeled fruits and not part of my plan. I can have a half avocado but as a snack with the 1 meal I can have a day. That's it.

Otherwise not so bad. Doing ok.

I was told unlimited green veggies with tomatoes and mushrooms tacked on the list. I did spinach, brussel sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, different lettuces, green Beans, cucumbers, collard greens and kale. Veggies like corn, peas, potatoes, squash are high in carbs and were disallowed on my preop. And like you said, not only is avocado a fruit, it is high in fat. I've eaten plenty of them postop but not on my preop diet.

The other item you want to look at are what kind of healthy fats are you getting? You need to get some. Advocado or peanuts (a few) are good for you: peanuts also have Protein.

You answered your own question...avocado is fruit, not veggie. It's 77% fat! which isn't going to help you with preop weight loss or liver shrinkage. Most preop diets are high Protein, low carb/low fat. The objective is to lessen the fattiness of the liver and reduce glycogen on the surface of the liver, so it's less slippery and easier to hold out of the way during surgery. The low carb diet reduces the glycogen reserves in our bodies and takes a lot of Water with it, which is why the perceived weight loss is so much...I lost a pound a day on my 14 day preop diet. It consisted of 3 Meal Replacement shakes per day + dinner of lean protein (3-6 oz) and all the low fat/low glycemic veggies I wanted. Peppers, zucchini, cucumbers, lettuce, green Beans, RAW carrots (not cooked) were ok. Don't eat the avocado...save it for a treat post op.

Avocado does not go with the pre op diet at all.

Once you have had the surgery down the line a few months then you can have it in moderation.

Avocado has good fats in it but it's still fat and you have to be careful.

Pickles are not raw vegetables and are full of salt and will make you retain Fluid which you don't want.

If in doubt about anything contact your surgeon or nutritionist for help. That's what they are there for.

Are you tracking your macronutrients? If you're low on fat for the day, then go ahead and have some avocado, like cut up in a salad or something. But if you've already had enough (healthy!) fats, then skip it. I don't think it's forbidden (I know I ate it pre-op), but it should fit into your overall meal plan for the day. Also, if you're making some kind of lettuce wrap, I think a bit of homemade guacamole smeared in there is a wonderful substitute for mayo. It's just about the amount and the overall nutritional picture for the day.

Regarding tracing, I really like cron-o-meter because it gives you a very detailed nutritional report (macro and micro) all on one page, so you can look at your nutrition for the day or week and see what you still need more of.

My nutritionist told us that avocado was considered a fat, not a veggie. We could count 1/4 of one toward our 2 tbl of fat per day.

The raw veggies fill you up and satisfy your cravings. Avacado is a slider and whoops there it's gone! It wont help at all. I would avoid it until such time as you're a couple months post op and you can put it on top of some tasty grilled chicken!

well i'm post op now and the surgeon told me at the hospital that i did great with pre-op diet, and that yes, my avocado and dill pickles were ok to have on pre op...

After surgery I have a hard time eating salads. I am 3 months out and struggle with salads. I can tolerate soft veggies in a Soup. I can tolerate avocado and tomatoes as well.

boo!!! i hope i don't have issues with salads. i LOVE them! hopefully a little more time and you will adjust! i am just wrapping up my full liquids phase (have appt next wed to advance diet). i wish you luck!

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
