bikrchk 1,313 Posted June 16, 2014 About 3 months, I think. I tried a Bloody Mary, (not my normal fare, but since I was avoiding carbonation and there was no decent wine, it was a low sugar choice. It was yummy, the spice didn't bother me, but it took a loooong time to get it down. Just felt like a really big, thick drink. As far as the "am I a light weight now"? question, the answer is not as bad as I thought I'd be, but yes, I have to pay closer attention and purposely drink slower to not go under the table. I used to be a big red wine drinker, but it sometimes makes my tummy feel icky so its a rarity now. I either choose a dry white, or tend to go for grapefruit juice tequila, lime and stevia for a grapefruit margarita or sugar free lemonade with raspberry vodka. 1 MammaMac reacted to this
hrhlaurie 185 Posted June 17, 2014 I like the idea of using the sugar free Torani syrups as a mixer. Some vodka, Syrup and skim milk and you have a super-charged Protein drink!

ashelaine 383 Posted June 17, 2014 My surgeon was pretty alcohol lenient as well. I had one sip of champagne at a wedding 6 weeks after surgery. I was feeling it. Last Memorial Day- my BFF and I stopped and had a drink. I do mean ONE (for me). I was in no shape to drive at all and she had two drinks and she was not either. We called our husbands to come get us
getnhealthyintx 281 Posted June 17, 2014 Mine said 6 weeks. Im not much of a drinker and being type 2 diabetic I really shouldn't. I like the idea of moderation in all things.
Jen35 283 Posted June 17, 2014 My doc and nut were quite lenient about the alcohol consumption during the weeks after surgery, so at about 4 weeks out, I had 3 or 4 sips of wine for my birthday. I didn't feel any effect until the 4th sip. I experimented gently from 1 month out to about 6 months out, never drinking much, being very cautious. This is going to sound strange, but while the alcohol barely had an effect back then, now at 9 months, it is really affecting me. I went wine tasting last Sunday, and I couldn't finish even my 3rd sip because I was feeling it. (And I do mean a sip - I always ask for half pours and I don't gulp it all, since I know it will go to my head ). So weird. I think it's strange that it would affect me more now than early out, but there it is. We go wine tasting pretty often, so I will continue to be really careful with it. I'm having that same issue. I have been able to drink fine (maybe 3 drinks over the course of an evening) and just get tipsy, never truly drunk. At 11 months post-op, one drink feels like three. I don't know why my tolerance has lowered all of a sudden. Really weird.
Terribj 208 Posted June 18, 2014 I am 3 months out and had a sip of beer over the weekend and - wow--did that hurt. I may try wine next month when I travel to see some friends who are pretty big drinkers...oh the peer pressure
Nicey2u 228 Posted June 19, 2014 I had a big glass of sangria last night sipping it over an hour and I was absolutely fine !! It was yummy!
Susan-031314 179 Posted June 19, 2014 Just over three months, this week my college besty came to town. On two days I had a glass of wine. It went down well but did hit me a little more heavily than in days past. I feel more guilty from the calories than the alcohol. Just not worth it at this point of my journey. I'll enjoy my glass of Jamison's in the future, but I want to hit a few more mini-goals before I repeat my drinking experiments.
babish 19 Posted June 19, 2014 (edited) my dr told me to listen to my body and it would tell me if it didn't like something. I had my first glass of wine last Sat at 3 weeks 2 days post op. I sipped on it during the course of dinner. I had a little left when we left the restaurant. I had no problems and I didn't feel any different but I was also a drinker before surgery. So Not sure if that is why it didn't have much effect. I'm just glad I'm feeling normal again. 30lbs down and 4 weeks post op tomorrow. Fullofitx3 146 Posted June 19, 2014 I think I was about 6 weeks out before having a drink, since surgery I have had 1 beer during a hockey game and it took me about 2/3rds of the game to finish.
babish 19 Posted June 19, 2014 My doc said no beer... Nothing that pops when opening (soda, beer, etc...) but I see that people are drinking it. Anyone know why this is?
Susan-031314 179 Posted June 19, 2014 Carbonation, bubbles are supposed to stretch your stomach. I paid dearly for my teeny tiny tummy. I want to keep it small!!!

butterfyeffect 257 Posted June 19, 2014 My doc said no beer... Nothing that pops when opening (soda, beer, etc...) but I see that people are drinking it. Anyone know why this is? I think everyone's doctor has a different opinion on this. I had my 6 week follow-up with my surgeon yesterday, and specifically asked about diet soda, as it's the one thing I truly miss. He said that the carbonation will make me belch more (and I already burp a lot) but if I didn't mind that, to go for it. Just as a once in awhile treat though, not everyday. He then went on to say the same thing about wine (Yay!) 1 jamesaltima reacted to this
