Soup as food vs soup as fluids

Recommended Posts

So it didn't really cross my mind when I watered down and made cream of mushroom Soup for Breakfast this morning. I figured if I made it the consistency of Water I could sip it but turns out- 4-5 spoonfuls and I am STUFFED. Doesn't hurt, luckily. I guess I need to be more mindful next time. chicken broth with whey Protein doesn't do this to me, maybe it's just creamy Soups? ! Thoughts?

It depends on how recent your surgery was in relation to how your tummy reacts to food. The Clear liquids don't need to be digested by the stomach so they move through without problem. Full liquids (the creamy soups) need some digestion and if your stomach is still swollen from surgery, your capacity will be a few spoonfuls. Listen to your body and stop when you feel full. As your stomach heals, you will be able to eat more before getting full.

I have the same issues with cream of anything Soup. I dont feel so good after eating them and the salt content is over the top.

I look at Soup broth as liquids. Vegetable juice is clearly a liquid. Tomato Soup is only a bit thicker. "Cream of" Soups and clam chowder are about the same. As long as you are just skimming off the top or filtering out the chunks, I think you are safely in bounds.

Same here, a few spoonfulls and I am full. I can't finish much.

I do follow the no drinking rule while eating soup.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
