I am almost 4 months into the 6 month required pre-op diet. I am getting all my other pre-op requirements done so I can hopefully have my surgery in early September. Tomorrow is my EGD and I don't know what to expect. I've never even had so much as my wisdom teeth out. Any advice?

The EGD is pretty easy and painless. You will be given medication through the IV to keep you comfortable and they use a spray to numb your throat when they put the camera down. My 7 year old has had over 25 EGDs and he says they are easy. You will sail right through it and be one step closer to the loser's bench!

i too have had multiple EGDs (two a year for 3 years, then yearly for the past 10 yrs).

the hardest part is, well nothing. really. they are incredibly easy. You get to the hospital/gastro center, they start an IV, you have to put a gown on your top only, you can keep your pants on.

they take you to the room and get all the prep stuff and the doc talks to you briefly. then they spray your throat. MY ADVICE- tell them you have a strong gag reflex and they will DOUBLE spray you! it's good because it numbs you and you don't feel a thing.

then they give you the happy stuff in your IV, and it seems like seconds later they are waking you up.

you go to a recovery room, they give you some pop or Water to drink, the doc comes in and tells you how it went. after about 30 minutes you get dressed and leave. really simple.

my hubs and i have always taken advantage of the fact that i can't go back to work (i've had sedation anesthesia) and we have my mom keeping the kids and we always go out to eat, or a movie, etc afterward!

I had an IV, a nap, and then they were done.

Nothing new to add...I got the IV, was wheeled into another room and was having a lovely conversation with a nurse and then all of a sudden I was in the recovery room. No soreness- just a funny dry couch for a few minutes

Did someone need to stay with you the rest of the day, or were you fine afterwards?

We never stayed either. Once you are awake and able to eat and drink you are on your way home. Good luck!

It was really easy and I was scared as hell

I totally understand Michael Jackson addiction now as I was given propophyl. Best nap ever!!

Woke up not groggy and was ready to go I. 20 minutes

I went shopping afterwards and got myself a late spade bag

Came home are an egg white omelet and took a nap.

A month later I went for colonoscopy and not scared at all. Was great experience

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
