Is it Asthma, or the extra weight?

Recommended Posts

I went to my PCP on Thursday for pre-op medical clearance, and learned that the Water retention, high blood pressure, shortness of breath and chest pains, is possible ASTHMA! Rather than my heart. He said that I exhale like a severe asthmatic.

As I sit here going through my life history, I am always thought that I was unable to 'breathe' after doing stuff (or singing), because I was always overweight. Now I am starting to rethink it, and am just in shock. Did anyone find out about unforseen medical issues when going for pre-op testing?

Also, the real question - whill the 'asthma' vanish when the weight is lost?

I had bad asthma as a 120 lb person and as a 248 lb person, it is unbearable. I find that the extra weight makes it so much worse.

If you do have asthma, losing weight will help control it.

You would have to discuss that with your doctor. Your asthma may not disappear once you lose weight, and it may or may not improve. Once your doctor puts you on a treatment plan, you should see improvement. Medication is key to managing asthma.

I told the doctor that at least two people told me that their asthma did not lessen with the weight loss. They were very surprised. I am soooooo looking forward to tomorrow, in either case.

I am 3 days post-op. I had major chest pains and my oxygen intake was around 85. I had to wait 2 days for the nurses to order a treatment. Soon after, I felt much better. I realized I couldn't breathe in the bed, so spent the rest of my sitting upright in a chair. The respiratory person said that it is NOT asthma, and that I was hyperventilating? What the heck?

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
