Band slippage revision to RNY. A question about insurance!

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I was banded back in 2005 and lost approximately 60 lbs. About two years ago I started having issues with my band and gained back a significant amount of the weight I lost. :( I had my EGD today in preparation for my surgery and was told my band has slipped. With all the issues I've been having with it, I wasn't the least bit surprised.

I am a bit apprehensive about the RNY but I believe it is my best option.

If you had a slipped band or other issues, was it easier to get your removal/revision approved through your insurance co.? If so, and your insurance company has a waiting period, did they waive it?

Thanks

Michelle

What were your symptoms for band slippage?

I had my band removed in April after having it almost 7 years. It was an emergency surgery as it had slipped and I couldn't even drink Water without pain. My insurance covered the removal. My slip was diagnosed by a upper gi. I lost very well with the band- from a size 28 to a 2- then back up to a 16. Im approved for a bypass and will have surgery in July. I think I just squeeked by with approval as my bmi is currently under 35 as I've lost weight since removal. I have BCBS. Approval took 2 weeks. My doctor sent in my records of compliance with the band, complications I had- gerd, erosion, then slip. I think it helped that I'd done well with the band for so long until I started having complications.

My band slipped 2.5 years ago. It was found after I had a barium swallow for acid reflux, gerd, and night coughs. When I went back to my surgeon, he said let's remove some Fluid and he did. I gained 10 lbs after that and yo-yoed with fills and un fills. I'm a size 16 now and my paper work was just submitted again for RNY. I was approved before earlier this year but was afraid and put it off.

I was banded in 2010. My band would move up and down. Some days it was 6 or 7

Before I could drink Water. My port would flip itself talk about painful!! I had gerd and a lot of pain. That started about 7 months after my band. I had to change doctors card his office closed. I saw a new doctor which rocks. After lots of time with all the issues I was having I was approved for removal and revision. I had my revision done 5/12. Lost a total of 90-95 pounds. Not recounting what I gained and relost after the revision just a total. Soo happy I had it done.

I'm currently dealing with the same issue. I've been having issues with vomiting off and on for a year and finally I had an upper GI done and come to find my band slipped. They are currently submitting the paperwork to the insurance for the bypass. I'm also a little apprehensive but Im not the best candidate for the sleeve so Im out of options :(

Hope everything goes well for you!! Keep in touch if you'd like!

Also experiencing the same thing had an upper GI band had slipped having issues with weight regain reflex food getting stuck and lots of pain. My Dr is doing the paperwork for a revision to bypass if approved it will be August 4th. I also am nervous by such a serious surgery but then I think look at what I've excepted now and deal with daily I can and will be able to handle the pain post surgery (always my biggest fear is pain) the Dr said he can do it laproscopically fingers crossed for an approval

I didn't hurt as much after my RNY as I did after the band. After the band I cried and said what have I done to myself. I was in extreme pain. When I had my revision I hurt but I was not in extreme pain. I have very low pain tolerance. My doc that did the revision does open RNY I would thought that I would thought that I would have been in more pain.

I think because you knew what to expect the second time around, ya know? That's what I'm hoping for if I'm approved for the RNY. I went into a pretty bad depression after my surgery because I just sat and watched life basically go on without me (in a sense, ya know what I mean) and I couldn't do anything but sip my Clear Liquids and cry. I have a high pain tolerance and I'm hoping that like the last time, gas is my only issue

After the band I was in pain from the gas mostly and my port site but I remember waking up from the surgeey in so much pain and when I tried telling the nurse she was sharp with me saying I already gave you meds I was nauseous too and when I had to get up and walk it was awful I could barely move. Hoping the pain for revision and removal is no worse than this if I made it through that and giving birth to two kids I can make it through this time too...I hope!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
