When do you feel full?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

So I am having trouble telling when I am satisfied. When I eat I don't feel anything. I stop eating before I feel full but the weird thing is around 20 mins later I get this feeling that I ate way too much. What should i do? Should i just slow down eating or what? Thanks for your help.

That's my first thought...you might be eating too quickly. They say it takes 20 minutes for our brains to sense that we've eaten so that's why it is usually suggested to spend about that time during each meal.

Kudos on stopping before your feel full though!! That's a trick I'm still working on!

I always eat pretty slow now... CHEW, CHEW, CHEW!

However, when I am eating, I stop in the middle and wait..... I usually will burp, and then I will eat about 1/8 of a cup more... wait... and the second burp and I push the plate away. NEVER have I ate and felt to full... Just satisfied.

I really do believe it is the timing and the way one eats.

I eat very slow, a bite every 1 to 2 minutes. I eat for 15 minutes maybe 20 and stop. Sometimes I feel like I could eat more, but I force myself to stop and I wait.....if I am still hungry after 20 minutes I tell myself I will eat more, so far I'm always full after the wait. It takes time for your stomach to tell your brain you are full, so that is why I stop eating after 15 minutes. It seems to be working for me. The times I didn't stop eating and ate until I felt full, oh my, I was miserable and had horrible shoulder and port pain.

I'm also still learning to listen to my body, the hiccups have been coming lately and I stop eating.

I usually get a feeling of pressure in my throat; sometimes it can even be painful. I rarely get any sensation from my pouch. I also sometimes sense that the next mouthful won't go down if you know what I mean. It's just a case of learning to listen to the signals your body is giving you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
