Should I try Protein Shakes Now or Just Wait?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone, I have a question for those of you who are in the pre-op diet stage or beyond it. My surgery date is Sept. 3rd and I I have ordered the Syntrax and powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury sample packs (thanks to this forum's advice). So now these packages are sitting in my kitchen and they do NOT look very appealing :) What would you advise - should I start trying them now so I know what I like or are they going to be so bad that it will make me dread the pre-op phase even more?! When did you start drinking them - ahead of time or only when you HAD to?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I haven't got to that point yet but I always thought I would try them ahead of time just to make sure they weren't going to make me ill so I would have time to run out and buy something different in case they taste yucky lol

I would start experimenting with shakes - I probably wouldn't do one every day at this point because you still have 3-4 months before surgery. Maybe a couple of times a week - you may find that you like the way you feel with an afternoon shake or when you start your day with a shake. It's worth a try.

Experiment with different flavors (Torani sugar-free syrups are great), different textures (add a couple of strawberries or blueberries) and different temps (you can drink them hot, iced or cold - read the directions if you are going to try it hot, the Protein doesn't like high heat).

One tip for those just trying out powdered shake mixes - mix the other ingredients in your shake first (ice cubes, fruit, etc). When that's mixed, add your shake mix and blend for a few seconds. I have found that the shakes get frothy if mixed for a long period of time.

Also, don't over-purchase before surgery. Your tastes may change and the one you think you like pre-op doesn't set well post-op.

Good luck!

I agree. I would sample some and figure out what you like and don't like. You don't want to get to the point where you have to use them and realize you don't have anything there that you like. It took me a while to find 2 kinds that I actually liked. :-)

Definitely give them a try now. That way you can find something you tolerate (and maybe even....wait for it....ENJOY! LOL!) before you have to begin pre-op. Just be aware that you aren't going to like them all, but you should be able to find something that you don't mind too much. :) Good luck!

Hey everyone! I don't even have a date yet, but my Unjury sample pack came yesterday. I heard that the chicken broth is really good and a welcome change to all the sweet Protein Shakes. So if ur asking to try stuff before hand, I definitely would. Doesn't hurt, they sell 4 packs at the store of different shakes, I bought 3 different kinds and I don't mind any of them. I drink them for Breakfast now.

I have my last nutrionalist appt next week and hopefully will get a date in July I HOPE!!

Hope this helps! Good luck!

Thanks Everyone! It was really good advice, because I just tried one (unjury chocolate Splendor in Decaf Coffee) and it's really not bad!! Not thrilled with the clumps of powder floating on top but I waited for the coffee to get down to 120 degrees so not sure how to prevent that - I guess you just keep stirring and stirring as you drink! Really appreciate the advice, and now I'm feeling that I CAN DO THIS!

I also picked up the nutri-bullet, the really good blender. It was on sale at Kohls, and I had a 30% coupon. So it was expensive, but it blends everything down to liquid perfection!!

Even the Protein powder mixes awesome in it.

I am trying to get everything together before hand and I found this site yesterday and I can't stop myself from reading everything!!

Everyone seems so supportive on here and I look forward to continuing my journey thru this site!!!

Nothing wrong with experimenting with Protein shakes now! Just be advised that your tastes may change after surgery, so don't pre-buy large quantities of anything! Adding a Protein supplement now may actually help boost your weight loss when worked into your meal plan. I know it did for me pre-op. Once I added supplements into my already low calorie pre-op plan, I lost faster.

You will use the cr@p out of that bullet the first month post-op. So easy! I still use mine today for an occasional shake and to make home made dressings and dipping sauces for meat. Yummers!

Awesome!! I use the hell out of it now!! I blend the powder shakes in them and I have NO CLUMPS!! Which is a nice change. I hate sipping the shakes and hitting a clump is just nasty. Hahah I just can't wait until I have a DATE! Ugh!!

I think trying them out first is a great idea. The last thing you want is to be fresh out of recovery and sore and not have something that tastes decent. oh, and of course, report your findings!

I started doing 1 or 2 Meal Replacement shakes a day now. I figured it cant hurt right? I also have purchased a few of the clear Protein drinks since for around 7 days after its Clear liquids. I am totally expecting it to taste like hiney but i guess you have to sacrifice to get what you want! I am going to experiment Now that way I will be prepared AFTER I get the surgery.

Okay, I just ordered a Nutribullet online from Kohls. Buying all the supplies is clearly the easiest part for me :)))

I will definitely report on what's good as I go along . . . . there was one "recipe" that had sugar-free caramel Syrup, coffee extract and some other things thats sounds DELICIOUS, it was on a post somewhere in here . . . That is the first one I'll try when I get my Nutribullet!

Here's one of my favorite recipes...for when I need a "treat"

Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookie Protein shake...

8 ounces of cold Water or 1% milk

1 teaspoon of cocoa powder

4-5 ice cubes

1-2 Tablespoons Torani sugar-free Peppermint Syrup

whizz up in your blender

Add a scoop of chocolate Protein Powder (I use unjury chocolate Splendor)

whizz until blended - maybe 10 seconds

Tastes just like a Thin Mint cookie!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
