Are any of the post-op people on this forum on daily steroids? Is there a way to take them by injection or is it okay with antacids? I am currently on 8 mg methylprednisolone per day and I really don't do well off of them. I have RA and get so stiff I cannot walk without a cane if I don't take steroids or high doses of ibuprofen. I have gained 20 pounds in the last few months on the steroids, and I'm afraid I will just keep gaining weight.

Thanks!

I am on 5mg prednisone daily and was sleeved 4 days ago. I have been crushing it and adding to Gatorade.

I also have RA and took steroids for 6 years and gain 100 lbs. I'm finally off of them & take orencia injections once a week. It doesn't cause weight gain. I was sleeved April 29. Ask your rheumatologist about starting a biologic like orencia. It has really been a life saver!!

Thanks, Jackie. Is this something you'll be on permanently? How did you discuss it with your surgeon?

Thanks for your reply, Krista. I've been on just about every medication there is for RA. I'm currently on the biologic Humira once weekly - but it's just not enough to keep me mobile.

I have taken 5mg of prednisone for about 8 years now. I was sleeved OCT 24,2013 and was off my steroids for two weeks and went back on them and have been ever since. I must say that my RA has improved greatly and I am scared to lower my doses in fear it will get bad again. I go back to the rheumatologist next month and we will see what he wants to do but 112 lbs lighter and I feel great, tho I still get the normal little aches and pains.

Thanks! I'm so glad to hear that can be tolerated. I will speak to my surgeon and rheumy about this again :).

I have been on prednisone for over 2 years, toward the beginning of those 2 years a much bigger dose. I've been tapering the past few months trying to get to the lowest possible dose before my surgery and for me 5mg was the lowest I could go. Doctors think maybe after I lose some of the weight I won't need the prednisone anymore since many times inflammation issues can be worsened by being overweight. I was sleeved on June 9 so it's only been 6 days. Going back to my rheumatologist next month. I also take imuran along with the prednisone. I was told to stop the imuran for 2 weeks (1 week before surgery, and 1 week after ). I start the imuran back up tomorrow.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
