Okay... So I'm 12 weeks post op. The nutritionist told me that I would have issues with my hair falling out. I was just wondering for some of you ahead, when does that stop?

Thanks!

Are you taking Biotin? It helps with hair coming out as much and will help with regrowth.

I was told that as long as you are losing your hair will come out.

Make sure you get in all your Protein because if you don't your hair will fall out more I was told.

If you take Biotin take it in chewable form from TwinLabs. You can get it from them or others that sell it on the internet.

Good luck and feel good.

I am losing my hair. I was forwarned and all but it is freaking me out nonetheless. Day after day gobs on my comb. I have fine hair so I believe I will need a wig soon. Everyone tells me it looks ok now. I have unwanted hair in other places so I was hesitant to take the Biotin but my endocrinologist said it will work only for the hair on my head? I don't know. I have spent so many years waxing in areas I don't want heavy growth in. What is a girl to do?

You need to make sure you get your Protein in. That is what prevents your hair from falling out. However it takes several months for you protein intake catch up to your hair. Meaning if you were to meet your protein goal from now on - it will take about 8 weeks for your hair to stop falling out.

Hi,

In reality, there is very little you can do to prevent it, although the above posts are correct in that getting your Protein in is key. I took the Biotin, I also used special, expensive hair care products from my stylist. I still lost a LOT of hair. Fortunately, I have very thick hair, so I did not need a wig, but about six months after surgery, as Christmas was approaching, I thought for sure I was going to go bald, and I had some very thin spots. Now my hair is coming back, but I think it will be another six months before it is back to where it was before surgery. It has been one of the few negatives of surgery. For any that are reading this and wondering if it was worth it - ABSOLUTELY! I would go bald to feel as good as I feel today.

Good Luck to you! Working with a good stylist really makes a big difference.

Carol

What if you are getting 60gr Protein per day. Will your hair still fall out? I'm postop week one.

That does scare me! However, you're right, I wouldn't take back having my surgery for the world. I went from a 26 and am now in an 18w. I feel so awesome. I'm just happy to know it grows back! Thanks for your help.

I am loosing lots but I have extremely thick hair too. Now it's average and I kinda like it but if it keeps up who knows. I am taking Biotin but my Protein is lower.

I have had no problem getting Protein in. My goal is 60-80 grams and I am there. Usually around 70. I want to chop my hair off to make me feel better and see less hair all over my clothes but my hubby said leave your hair as it looks fine. He never interjects like that so I am dumbfounded on what to do. I am trying to roll with it and that is all I can do!

More than likely you will still experience some Hair loss. Most (but not all) do. How much also varies a lot. For the first three months my clinic's plan only allowed for 40-50 grams of protein a day. I was four months post surgery when the hair loss began, which is late, three months is average. Most see the hair loss stop around eight months. Still it is scary when it is happening. The shock of surgery plus the decrease in protein prior to and immediately following surgery is what really causes the loss.

I didn't have an issue with it. I actually lost more hair pre-op than I did post-op. Go figure.

I am so glad I just read this thread!! I am 5 mo post op and for the last month, I swear my hair has been filling my hairbrushes and I have been "shedding". My family even told me they are finding my long hairs all over the house! I took a picture last night of how much hair was in the tub I was so frieghtened by it. I had always heard about the Hair loss, but assumed that since I have been eating my Protein and taking Vitamins I would be safe. It's comforting to read this is so common and temporary. Thank you Marathongirl for posting this, and thank you everyone for the input. It so greatly appreciated. :D So far this is the only negativbe I have expirienced. WooHoo!

I'm losing too and I am diligent with Protein and Vitamins. I am shedding and hair is all over. I have a lot of hair so its not noticable yet. It's a small price to pay I think.

This is the one thing I try not to think about... I have thin hair already. I was taking Biotin, but had to stop everything pre-op. I will start back up as soon as I'm allowed to start post-op Vitamins.< /p>

I worry also so I started Biotin a month before surgery & I still take it. 2 weeks ago I went ahead and started the Nioxin Shampoo I've read great reviews and you see good results of new Hair growth after about 3 months. I have long fine hair, I figured maybe if I get a jump start before it starts falling out it won't be so bad lol. I already see new growth at my "bang" line from the biotin it's like baby fine and uneven but at least it's new growth. I'm just over 5 weeks post op. Even if the Nioxin doesn't work it makes my hair super shiny and my scalp feels super clean.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
