I am so bummed. One of my goals was to get to a point where I could jog or run again. I went to my orthopedist today and he said that I had arthritis in my right knee and running is not going to be an option for me.

I suppose I'll have to find some other kind of exercise, but at this point, just walking more than a mile would be an accomplishment.

That's a tough one...sorry to hear that. With orthopedic issues, I was told years ago to knock it off with the Tai Bo kick boxing and other impact exercises. You have to get cleaver about burning calories when your movement is restricted. Strength training is helping, but I miss being able to do high intensity stuff. One thing is for sure, though........as the pounds come off, the pain should reduce some, too. I wish you good luck and good health.

I've had two knee surgeries on my right knee, arthritis, and chondromalacia and I still run (slowly). I use the Chi running style which puts less stress on your knees. I don't feel any different after running 3 miles than I do after walking 3 miles. I do get Orthovisc (gel lubrication) injections in my right knee every year or so and it helps tremendously, but I mainly do it for the chondromalacia because it makes it really hard to sit for any length of time. I've run 3 half marathons this year. My orthopedic surgeon is ok with my running.

I'd like to hear more about the Chi style of running. Is it like power walking?

Chi running is a running form. The main elements are posture, leg swing, pelvis position, and forward lean. Lots of videos on YouTube and there are training classes throughout the U.S.

I also have arthritis in my right knee. I was never a runner but it still bummed me out that I wasn't going to be able to do a lot of high impact exercises. The best form of exercise my doctor told me was swimming. It burns a TON of calories and is easy on your joints. I try to get in the pool now at least 2-3 times a week. Feels great!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
