Shiner86 60 Posted June 11, 2014 Thanks for all the well wishes. Waiting for my surgeon to get here. It takes an army to move me because of all the things I'm hooked up to. I'm nervous of course and I cried again but my anesthesiologist will be here soon and the nurses said they will give me something for anxiety. The heperin shot in my belly didn't hurt but that's the reason I had to get here 2 hours early. Practiced my breathing with that funny breathing tube game (don't remember it's real name). Anyways- just thought I would chronicle what they have you do preop. Bring something to keep you occupied. For me, it's this app on my phone. See y'all on the flip side (aka recovery). #9grammy 274 Posted June 11, 2014 Why the heparin shot in belly? Has anyone else gotten this?

DenaD 6 Posted June 11, 2014 The heparin shot is a blood thinner to prevent blood clots during and after surgery, I believe. I received them as well.
Josh2xh 70 Posted June 11, 2014 Why the heparin shot in belly? Has anyone else gotten this? I had this shot as well.
NewTee2014 8 Posted June 11, 2014 I had the shots the entire time I was hospitalized. Very painful in the arm. I suggest you always get them in the belly.
HaddocksEyes 205 Posted June 11, 2014 My doctor also requires this shot before surgery. He said most blood clots happen while the patient is still on the table. But get this - he also requires the shots twice a day for a week after surgery. So the patient (or someone else) has to give the shots! Has anyone else faced this with their doctor? Good luck in surgery!!! May your recovery be swift and as painless as possible.
jajmj 40 Posted June 11, 2014 Only had those shots daily while in the hospital. It was funny cuz right before the injection the nurse said, "this is going to burn" ....so I waited a minute and said, "is it a delayed thing cuz I don't feel anything!" Guess I am lucky! shelly75 35 Posted June 11, 2014 I had those shots during my stay at the hospital and had to give myself a shot everyday for 20 days at home. It's not fun at the beginning, but you get used to it. Anything that can prevent blood clots is ok with me. Good luck, I hope your surgery went well.
