Starting to get nervous...

Recommended Posts

My surgery is scheduled for tomorrow (June 12)... Yikes! I keep reading all the threads for post-op, and I'm worried. All this pain and being uncomfortable, having a tight feelings in the chest, not keeping fluids down. All of a sudden, I'm not so looking forward to this. My husband keeps telling me I'm doing the right thing, but I'm still worried. I only have three weeks off work. I have to go back, no way to extend it. I'm trying to stay positive, but I've never had any kind of surgery, so I'm kind of flipping out... ????

I was flipping out yesterday (surgery date) too..hard not to. The gas pain sucks, I won't lie. They should hook you up with great pain relievers after the surgery...I was given morphine while in recovery..helped immensely. I think the thing that freaked me out the most was a shot in my belly before going into the operation room. Something to stop blood clots. But you know what? I didn't even feel it. I'm am now on day 2 post band. Still have the gas pains, but gas-x helps...along with the meds. I have been sleeping in my recliner...it helps! Good luck to both of you!!

You'll be fine. yes, it is surgery and there is some pain that goes with it, but its TEMPORARY.

i didnt have gas pain, but was very sore on my port side/hernia side. After 3 days, the pain was little to none unless i was doing too much at home. 3 weeks should def be more than enough. I went to a wedding 7 days post-op and was fine. Yes, a little sore, but fine. I had 2 weeks off because my surgery week backed up to my already planned vacation and i was out and about that whole second week.

You will do fine. I love my band and I'm so happy i made this decision. I wouldnt take it back for a second!

You have to realize that people who suffer post op will be the first to post their misery. Not saying there isn't any pain or discomfort but I had no pain and just some minor discomfort. I didn't post my misery and most people don't post unless they have a question they need advice about?

Hey you! No worries! My surgery is outpatient! That's amazing! Well, to me. I'm not saying there won't be pain, but you have to think.....if its horrible pain....they aren't going to send you home with a few norcos and be like....bye!!!! They want me walking right away after, I'll go home within like 5 hours of the operation, if all goes well! You got this :) I will be praying for you!

Thanx, everyone! I'm scheduled to be at the hospital at 11:50a tomorrow morning. I feel fine right now. The liquid/protein shake diet today has been rough, but all in all, I'm doing alright. A little nervous tho!

Well, I am one day post-op! So far, so good! I was surprisingly calm the day of, even up until I was taken back. I had some pain up under my left rib, but was told it was gas (and I figured such by reading the threads on this wonderful app!) I only walked twice last night, once about four hours after the surgery, and that was just to the bathroom and back, then the second time, I wandered around the hospital floor for about maybe 10mins. I didn't have any problems, just made sure I took it slow.

I took my leak/swallow test this morning (upper GI) and everything looked good according to the radiologist. I've now graduated from ice chips to sips of Water, so that's a good thing (the cotton mouth is AWFUL!) I haven't had any problems keeping the Water down, so that's a good thing, too. I haven't had any nausea, either, but the nurses have been really good with getting me meds BEFORE I need them. So, once my dr reviews the leak/swallow results, I should be able to be discharged. The only discomfort I have is the muscle soreness. But like I said, they are doing really well with my pain management!

So, once my dr reviews the leak/swallow results, I should be able to be discharged.

Best of luck to everyone, both pre- and post-op!!!

Thank you, everyone! Everything is going well! I'm day 3 post-op, and I feel pretty decent. I was taking the pain meds religiously once I got home, but decided I would try to see how I was feeling today without it (it says to take as needed). My last dose was early this morning, and I'm doing fine. I was told by six weeks post-op, I should be walking at least a mile per day, but so far today I'm already at 3/4 of a mile. I won't lie, I'm still a bit uncomfortable, but I'm no baby lol.

I haven't had gas pains since at the hospital, just the gurgling all over. The incisions are a bit sore, but nothing I can't tolerate. Once I get up and walk around, the incision areas and muscles loosen up, and I feel alright. I am walking every 2-3 hrs, except over night, which then it's about every 4. I'm usually a fast walker, but I'm definitely taking it easy!

I wish every other commercial on TV wasn't about food!!! Hope everyone else is doing well!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
